Windows 7 won't start after update on 5 Jan 2018

I started Windows 7 as usual this morning (Jan 5 2018) and saw that an update
was due. The update apparently proceeded as expected until notification that the
computer must be restarted. It closed down showing "reconfiguring updates" and
then restarted showing the motherboard splash screen, then "Starting Windows".
That is as far as it got. I tried again but it either hung or stopped showing
"no signal" and booted again as far as "Starting Windows" but no further. Using
the proprietary program Macrium Reflect I restored Windows up to yesterday and
my computer is working again. I have (I hope) disabled automatic Windows
updates. I am wondering how to install the update successfully if this is possible.

My best guess is that its the CPU patch update.
Allthough released by MS it came with a caveat

However if your running IE\Edge there are also fix's within the latest Roll-up as well

Hey everybody,
I appear to have the same or similar issue as described by jsampson45.
Yesterday morning I've installed KB4056897 and also KB4056894 (manually) for win7 then I shut down the computer.
Now when I try to boot windows the exact same thing jsampson wrote happens
Trying to use safe mode also doesn't work.
And I cannot use the restore option because there are no backups.
I'd rather not have to do a completely fresh install
Is there a way to undo the latest updates without being able to boot windows?
And how would I go about that? A step by step would be awesome as I'm not very tech-savvy
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Very interesting problem clearly related to KB4056894 install cumulative update from Jan. 2018. If I remember correctly this file is about 200MB big. I have the same problem. Everything from download/install went ok. However, problem came alive when you tried to restart your pc after Win configurated all udates/installed them. I've got a nasty BSOD starting with 0x000000C4 and some other numbers possibly related to my driver...Ok no problem, right?! You'll simply boot in safe mode and remove the update manually. Well you don't because after loading files in safe mode screen ...the same bsod! Your only hope is system restore point (Tested because I've learned my lesson before the hard way ). I'm usung Win 7 Ultimate x64 and what is even more interesting very ancient X2 4600+ AMD dual core CPU. Sort of the same like poster above me. It makes me think there is clearly something messing up with CPU driver....

Ive got the same issue, athlon 64x2 dual core cpu. Pc was running great when the updates came in. During reboot the pc would not start. I had no safe mode, restore points would not work, I had to use a system image to get my pc back.. For now i have disabled auto updates from the services screen and waiting on a fix for this.

Four of my machines installed this patch okay, the Athlon 64 x2 5800+ applied it and crashed on restart just as those have mentioned above. I have tried it twice with the same results. Used the restore and was able to reboot back to prior. Those who had restore disabled, and no disc might not be happy.

Hi, same problem here, with an athlon x2 3800 on a DFI NF4 socket 939 Board.
After installing KB4056897, at boot, the pc just stops working.
Luckily, playing in the last windows restore point, got it fixed again, temporarily.
Any idea to what/who could fix this problem?

From Repair option >> command mode, use COPY/PASTE then the syntax will be OK
NOTE image:>>>C<< must be your OS installed drive, change if required

dism /image:c:\ /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7601.24002.1.4 /norestart /scratchdir:d:\temp

Just installed same cumulative update for Jan. 2018 today and it crashed mine also. Also a AMD dual core 64, but I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. Tried all three system restore points and got same error 0x8007000e on all. System repair also failed. Tried torchwood's above command prompt (command string) but keep getting error about unable to locate file. Maybe because I'm at 32 bits the string would not work (IDK). Anyway I'm now in middle of an drive image restore. MS sure did us AMD processor people in without any warning.

I'm getting pretty much the same thing with my AMD dual core but upon reset it went into 'System recovery' that resulted in another BSOD but then asked to do a system restore and it worked, booted but then the update was removed. I don't understand torchwood's fix. I'll hold on for a while. The wife's HP W7 updated the security fix fine
