Memory reserved after using nomemristrict in GTA4

Hi guys.

windows says 2GB is in hardware reserve and autocad says my HD4870 has 2879MB of memory. all this happened after i used a nomemrestrict crack in GTA4 which allows the game to use system memory i believe. dont ask me why, i was curious.

I have searched far and wide for an answer. I'am definitely on 64bit W7 Pro, and using latest hardwares(i7, gigabyte UD5, 1600MHZ DDR3 and HD4870 1GB). I have also tried unticking the maxboot memory in msconfig.

there is no memory remap option in the bios and i have flashed it many times. I have also reinstalled windows and formatted my HDD. but still only 4GB is usable.

Anyone can help? I really do need the memory. I use highend 3d software and work with large PDS files at times simultaneously.

thanks

[EDIT] answer on page 2. Wasnt anything software or setting or bios after all. Faulty motherboard RAM slots

And this only occurred after using the -nomemrestrict cmd line switch? Strange.

I assume when you formatted you also wiped GTA IV and all it's settings?

Also, you didn't re-use the cmd line switch after a fresh installation?

In MSCONFIG, try unticking both max memory and no. of processors.

yeh formatted everything and have not installed GTA4 or reuse the cmdline switch.

both are unticked as is the default.

have even tried putting the DIMMs in different slots. but no difference.

also, strangely CPUz shows the dimms as dual channel even thought it recognises 3 of them and in the right slots.

Maybe check your mobo manual to see if you are possibly running an unsupported memory config. Although you had everything running well before the nomemrestrict.....
Have you done a memtest?

i used a nomemrestrict crack in GTA4 which allows the game to use system memory i believe. dont ask me why, i was curious.

FYI - The 'nomemrestrict' just means that you can push all the settings as far as they go without the proper amount of memory held on a Graphics card (Hence why when you push high enough it goes red). Its a good idea if you want to see what the game looks like with everything on high, but it really does lag when you play for longer or are in a busy area with lots going on.

As far as the issue, new to me as i never had this problem.

yep, nothing came up with mem test.

-norestriction
-nomemrestrict
-availablevidmem "x"
-percentvidmem "x"

I think i used 250% or something for the percentvidmem. which gives the HD4870 2709GB of ram as seen in the configuration page of autocad.

I should also mention my previous card was HD3650 which used virtual memory. I performed the 'trick' on that card and it carried over when i upgraded to the HD4870.

But i thought this would only apply in the game. somehow it affects the whole operating system.

Even POST only sees 4GB of ram.

Macpod,
I am not a gamer but i think in order to undo this norestriction patch, you need to erase what is written in the file 'commandline.txt' located on 'GTAIV' main folder. This will rescue the known graphics restriction.
Pl. correct me if i am wrong. Since you use this game and crack you'll probably know better.
Hmmmm.....but you say you dont have GTA any longer.

yeh. i have formatted and reinstalled a fresh copy of windows 7. there is no GTA4 or the commandline on the computer.

I have even flashed my bios. should i take out the battery on the motherboard? would that do anything?

Even POST only sees 4GB of ram.

Ahh, the disappearing RAM trick. The problem is definitely hardware related, not software. It's not uncommon with the X58 chipset, especially upon a cold boot.

When you ran memtest, was that only on with 4GB detected by BIOS?

Some Common Known Causes:

Faulty RAM module
Incorrect RAM timings
Faulty Dimm slot / mobo
Faulty PSU
Improper CPU seating / uneven pin+pad contact
???

I'd start with the simplest route, which is eliminating a faulty RAM module or dimm slot.

Remove all but one known good 2GB stick, and then boot the PC from each white slot individually (or dimm 1/3/5). If the PC POSTs from each slot with a known good module, try the other 2 modules individually.

If the PC fails to POST with a particular RAM module in any dimm, then the RAM is faulty.

If all the modules are okay but the PC fails to POST in one dimm slot consistently, then you have a faulty dimm slot.

If there is no problems with either the RAM or the dimm slots, then the issue lies elsewhere.

I've had similar issues with that with my current build. The first time it occurred, one of my memory modules had actually died. But then it also happened with my replacement RAM, yet all the RAM is good and so are the dimm slots.

In my case, it wasn't until I removed one of my suspected to be faulty video cards that everything has returned to 'normal' (ie I consistently show all 6GB at POST now. Before, it would sometimes show all 6GB, sometimes only 4GB etc. However, I still can't conclusively say it was the video card causing my issue )

You are the first person on the internet to mentioned the possibility of a faulty MOBO ram slot. That is exactly what is at fault.

I never thought it would be the motherboard since ive never had a problem with one in 3 previous computers. but it is indeed both SLOT 5 and 6 that are dead.

It's stupid that windows 7 just shows a dead ram slot as hardware reserved. the Bios also doesnt mention a thing. both are very misleading

Now i'm using slot 1, 3 and 4, which shows all 6GB. I think ill just use it this way for now since i have a project to finish. Is there anything potentially dangerous with using these slots? are they in dual channel or all single channels?

I guess they'll just give me the X58A as replacement since the old EX58s are gone. Thats something i guess. but the pain of reassembling everything.....

I hope google picks this up
