Hi!

i recently bought a slim bluray burner Sony Nec Optiarc BD-5730s. Since i had a PATA dvd-rw before that in my laptop (HP 9500t cto) i had to buy an additional external enclosure. I bought it. it doesn't have any labels on it so i don't know who the manufacturer is.

and the problem is...

everytime i connect the usb 2.0 enclosure (with the burner in it, ofcourse) in win 7 64bit shit happens. and by "shit" i mean: when there is no disc in the drive everything looks ok. my computer and device manager recognize it and everything is ok. when i put in the audio cd i could easily playback it. but when i put in a dvd or a blank bluray win just goes crazy. every 5 or so secs i hear the sound when something is plugged in using usb and another 5 secs that it's disconnected.
when i went to my computer that's exactly what happens. the BD -ROM icon just keeps on appearing and disappearing. the same thing happens in the device manager.

i tried plugging in the burner while in win vista and xp and everyhing is fine. i also managed to burn an .iso to a blank bluray without any problems.

so, since i'm mostly using win 7 64bit, plz tell me what the hell is happening?!

thx!

Is the dvd compatible with win 7?

why wouldn't it be if everything seems normal when there is no dvd or bluray in the burner?

furthermore, i made a dual boot with vista ultimate x64 on the other partition and the same thing happens.
guess that it isn't due to win 7 but something to do with BIOS...
any suggestions?

btw, when i enter BIOS there are very few options to change. i can't even find where is my usb burner mentioned...

and if you are wondering why i wrote that i could use every feature of the burner normally on vista and xp, that was on other machines, other that the HP laptop.

Dose the external drive has is own power supply or is it just using the USB connector?
The Blue Ray may be drawing to much power for the usb to handle

nope. it couldn't be that because i told u already, i got it working on other two computers running vista and xp, both 32bit. i even burned a bluray disc on xp without the power supply cable.

A laptop may not provide the full usb 2.0 voltage that a desktop will since they have a small power supply.

nope, not that either. since i can read the bluray disc on a 13" laptop (and the HP one is 17". i guess 17" provides more power than a 13" one).

i even tried your theory and connected the data cable to my HP laptop and the power supply cable to my desktop. still the same.

i guess it has to do something with bios or 64bit system... any thoughts?

The only place it will show up in the BIOS is in the boot options. And then only if your BIOS supports booting from a USB device. Other than that the BIOS doesn't really have anything to do with external USB devices. I have an external HP DVD burner, its not blue ray but it is LightScribe capable. I haven't had any problems burning DVDs on my x64 win 7 system. You could try going into control panel and turning off "Autoplay". There might be a program launching when a blank disk is inserted that is causing your problem. I think there is a "HIDE empty drives" setting in Folder options somewhere too that you might want to look at.

thx for the advice but nothing happened....

i'm really starting to lose it...
can't find the reason to this nonsense.

i tried it also on win 7 ultimate x64 on my desktop and it works flawlessly.

i also updated my usb drivers on the HP laptop... i really think that it isn't due to windows but something else is in play here but i don't know how to determine what.

any help is appreciated!!

I don't know what to tell you. I have a Sony Walkman mp3 player, works fine on all my PCs except my old XP beater. When I plug it in I get the detected, undetected beeps like you do. It acts like you are plugging it in and unplugging it again over and over. Works fine on my other XP PC though. I didn't bother to figure out why because all i wanted to do was recharge it on that PC.

yep, but i bought the burner just to watch HD films connected to my Pioneer 50" plasma TV with HDMI. and unfortunately, this is my only laptop that has HDMI so i'm really pissed off right now...

thx for all of your suggestions though...

If it was me I would suspect the USB enclosure you put the drive in. My full size HP external DVD drive came pre-installed in an enclosure with an external power pack. That was one of the reasons I bought it. It's reliable and works when I need it.
I also have an external USB hard drive enclosure that I put an extra laptop drive I had in. The enclosure was on the cheap side as far as price goes. It doesn't have an external power pack, just the two USB cords, one for data and one for the extra power needed. I've noticed that at times it didn't work very well, transfer speed would slow to a crawl or it would just stop responding. More so on certain computers. Once I plugged it into a dedicated power pack it worked fine all the time. If I ever buy another one I'm going to spend a few more bucks for something name brand.

Firmware update. I don't know if you tried this.

yes, it was the first thing i did. the problem is that the update tool reads that my FW version is 1.70 and it cannot update it to 1.02. guess that is because of the usb enclosure...

@alphanumeric: the enclosure that i bought is the only one that i found in my country (Croatia) so i don't have an alternative regarding the enclosure...

Sorry the Sony website was useless with an out of date driver.
Your 1.7 driver is a newer version driver than the 1.02.
Keep the 1.7. If you find a 1.8 or larger number that would be a newer version.

Sony needs to update their website.

ok, people. after about 30hrs of trying to figure out what to do and after almost losing all hope that i'll get it working on my laptop suddenly i got an idea to turn the wireless network adapter off (hardware switch).

bluray burner, at that time, was plugged in only with an usb data cable and all of the sudden the burner could read the bluray disc that was in it. i don't know why it happened but i guess that wireless adapter draws too much power all by itself and it isn't supplying the usb ports with enough power supply.
another funny thing: when i tried to figure out how can i use both the wireless internet and the bluray burner i couldn't manage to get it working until i tried all of the combinations with both the data and additional power cable. nothing. but then i plugged in only the power cable and left it running for about 30 seconds. after that i plugged in the data cable and voila... IT FINALLY WORKS as it should.

oh, i'm so happy right now that i could go out, buy myself a bottle of vodka, get drunk and watch bluray movies :)

p.s. can any1 please explain to me why it wouldn't work if i first plugged in the data cable and then additional power or even if i first plugged in the power cable but shortly after (less than 30 secs) plugged in the data cable?

It just showes that you need to get a better USB case with it own power supply. The next time you try you may be back too orignal problem. That laptop barely has enoungh power to power both.
