October 2010 Patch Tuesday will come with most bulletins ever

According to the Microsoft Security Response Center, Microsoft will issue 16 Security Bulletins addressing 49 vulnerabilities on Tuesday, October 12. It will also host a webcast to address customer questions the following day.

Four of the vulnerabilities are rated "Critical," 10 are marked "Important," and the last two are classified as "Moderate." All of the Critical vulnerabilities earned their rating through a remote code execution impact, meaning a hacker could potentially gain control of an infected machine. At least eight of the 16 patches will require a restart.

The list of affected operating systems includes Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2. Microsoft Office XP, Office 2003, Office 2007, and Office 2010 are also being patched, as are the supported Mac versions: Office 2004 and Office 2008. Interestingly, Microsoft Office Web Apps is also included on the list; this is the first time we've seen it present.

Thanks for the heads up jan, just last week this new laptop had 25 updates in one evening (i installed office 2007) and the very next day there was a further 18 updates, so i am getting acustomed to very large updates!:shock:

It's getting to be a very long list of updates that you have to install to keep your system safe.

Does anyone besides me wait a couple of days before installing updates just to see if there are any reported problems?

I don't as the problems reported are usually only on some systems and probably wont affect yours.
There's always system restore and I keep multiple disk images in case of problems.

Sigh ... That's one of the problems being a senior citizen. I forget about system restore and the fact I have system images. If only I could remember where I put the gingko biloba.

Before any install of those patch you can review them (right panel) in the listing of Windows Update panel.

I almost do so before install all those patches. Taking sometimes a little to read but at least you know "approx" what you're installing on your system.

If your like me by the time you find the images they are outdated or the Macrium disappeared.
