Install with recovery discs

Hi, have just bought a laptop with Win 7 on it but want to replace the 5400rpm drive with a 7200rpm one.

Will I be able to use the recovery discs I made to install on a fresh drive or do they only work if there is already a recovery partition on the drive I want to install onto.

If you still have access to the Windows 7 will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on and see what partitions you actually have.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

With Acer you can use either the disks produced by eRecovery or run the factory Partition. So you can install to the new HD with the disks if you want the factory bloatware, or find a clean Win7 DVD installer for your version if you want a cleaner install.

My understanding is that the recovery disks are intended for a disk failure situation. This assumes that the disks themselves are ok. But you'd still have the "old" disk with its recovery partition.
I assume it's not a new laptop covered by warranty?

May be slightly more tricky than that. From what I know, when you boot from the recovery disk to a fresh, unpartitioned hard drive, you may get a "recovery mismatch" or restore failed error, that error is related to the HDD not being formatted and partitioned since the Acer Recovery disks do not perform this function for you. There is an Acer utility called 'Post Acer Disk Formatter CD ISo Image' which will do the job for you.

Download this file, burn to CD. Boot from this CD, follow next-next-next and a PQSERVICE partition will be created for you. Next boot from your recovery disk and follow instructions.

Do I understand correctly that you desire to replace the hard disk with a faster one and that you don't have a problem but do desire a faster disk?

If that be the case, then please submit a copy of the output of disk management AND tell us the capacity of the new drive.

Our advice hinges on this info.

Run disk management:
WIN | type DISKMGMT.MSC | ENTER
WIN is the key with the wavy flag.

Maximize the output of Disk Management:
ALT Spacebar key combo | X key
Drag the field separators (such as between Status and Capacity) to show entire field.

Make a snapshot:
WIN | type SNIPPING | ENTER
Click the New button.
Drag the cursor around the area you want to snip.
File | Save as | select save location and name | Save button

Thanks for the clarification Bill. While I made the Recov Disks on two Acer Vista desktops we have here, I actually installed the Win7 factory upgrade DVD to wiped HD. So it may well be different.

One would assume the point of making the disks on any make is to use them in case the HD fails and recov partition is not available to run. I use system images and save the recov disks as last default.

Yes that's what I was suggesting in the earlier post - but who knows.

I did something similar a couple of weeks ago.

I have an ACER desktop with a 1TB HDD. I wanted to make a replacement disk to have on hand so that I could be up and running in 10 minutes if the first HDD failed. This is all I had to do and the OP can do the same.

1) MS system image current drive (all named volumes)
2) Take new disk out of the bag & plug it in (alone)
3) Use system repair DVD & restore image. Windows does all partitioning, formatting etc....
Thats it - booted immediately.

It left the space for the hidden partition (PQService). Imaged that partition from the old disk and restored to the new with Macrium Reflect.

Installing Windows 7 HP on a new hard disc from recovery discs

The hard disc of my Gateway NV78 notebook pre-installed with Windows 7 HP has crashed. I have made the recovery discs in 3 DVDs . I will be buying a new hard disc. I would like to know whether it is possible to install Windows 7 HP on the new hard disc from the recovery discs or I have to go in for a new installation disc.

The answer is yes, as long as the Recovery disks will run.

If not, find any Win7 retail installation disk, extract the ISO image using ImgBurn to create an all-versions installer to install your licensed version using the Product Key on COA sticker.
