‘Super’ WiFi and Cell Service over airwaves

‘Super’ WiFi and Cell Service over airwaves

Ever been stuck in a classroom with no cell service? How about trying to find Wi-Fi on a road trip or hotel? There is a light at the end of the tunnel — a really bright light. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently approved the use of free airwaves for public use. What does that mean you may ask? It means that wireless Internet and cell service can now be broadcast over slightly lower frequencies for miles.
The lower frequencies mean longer range and better penetration of materials, such as concrete and metal, according to Digital News Report.

Considering how bad my connection (phone) is around campus, this would be awesome.

Most of the building here are solid concrete, so not a chance at getting a signal...

This was brought up as a possibility when television went from analog to digital

Old TV airwaves to be sold for wireless internet - tech - 01 August 2007 - New Scientist

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to shake up the US wireless market on Tuesday by approving rules for a big airwaves auction that would require the winner to make them accessible to any wireless device including cell-phones or laptop computers.
The sale is likely to begin in December 2007 or January 2008, and the government expects it to raise at least $10 billion from it. The UHF frequencies are being returned by television broadcasters as they move to digital from analogue signals in early 2009.

But of course once FREE to television users for decades, they are now going to be paid for.

This is great news. I wonder how long it will be before the changes take place. I love my Android phone and outside in my front or back yard I have full bars and 3g network, but inside if I don't connect to my wireless internet, I can only get 2g and I only have 0-2 bars signal strength and even drop calls sometimes.

It might be great news but.......What is it going to cost us for the "free" use of the peoples airways resulting in wider area / better service. Isn't this where the carriers charge higher prices because they are providing better services which then justifies the rate increases.

Sounds like the power grid and power companies to me and we know how well that has worked out for the average consumer. Carrier cost going down, Customer costs going up. More business as usual.

I really hope I'm wrong but I doubt it. Only time will tell.

Just keep in mind this one very simple Fact.......

"Net Neutrality" has not gone away. It is just being done more quietly.

Hmmmmmmmmm,,,,,,,,..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????

o 0 O (Let's move internet access to the airwaves we already control? Eureka?????)

If I understand properly, these are the same airwaves used by TV?
What's going to stop them from saying,, those waves are already under FCC jurisdiction for censorship, only repurposed, however, the laws still remain.

I[m just saying,, it is something to really think about before actually using them.
Otherwise, great idea, but would you really want to be under the control of the FCC by using them?

Nice write up Lordbob, interesting technology is on it's way.

It's supposed to take a couple more years to work out the details not to mention new networking hardware will be required.

There is a PDF with specs and information about white space at the top of this google search page. Lots of info about this down the page.
