I used a de-frag programme to speed up my VAIO which uses W7. it was a disaster.
As a result I've had to re-load lots of stuff and an unfortunate side effect has been that when in Control Panel I can't click on lots of the links to perform actions like "create a new user profile" "find and fix problems" etc. it's a nightmare. Can anyone help?

what program did you use?

it should of made a restore point or promted you to make one usually so restore back to before you performed the defrag.

Well restore back to before you defraged, the program should be able to do that for you within the logs settings not sure on glary utilities been a long time since i used that program.

I use winutilities pro, it's great for everything.

Hi Scribe ! Welcome to the forums .

First of all , when one utility is bundled with windows , and that is efficient enough (Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragment ) why will you go for a third party program ?

Secondly , it seems that you cannot access to Accessories > System Tools >System Restore .... is it ? IF so , there is an alternative way to do it . Do you have windows 7 installation dvd ? (if you dont have , Download Windows 7 System Recovery Disc and burn it in a dvd) Boot from it . When it will say "install now" , click on "repair" (see the attachment ) . From the recovery options you may easily choose system restore option .

No disrespect but the utilities in windows is ok for the average user for more advanced user 'third party programs' are much more efficient and do a better job.

9 out 10 windows user's would agree. :D

You must have used one of the tweaks in Glary utilities, as defragging would not cause those kind of probs.

Many of us use 3rd party CCleaner and defraggers like Auslogics which are better than those utilities in Win7, however tweaking is another thing: Win7 does not need tweaking beyond normal system settings within itself.

Be warned: Tweaking will always come back to bite you in Win7! You cannot tweak a system this lightweight and spare without repercussions.

I agree the CCLEANER family are great and best of all FREE.

Not me. Why would you trust a third party defragmenter in Windows 7 over the windows defragmenter? That is old windows think.

ccleaner on my windows install destroyed my scheduled tasks (including the windows) and I didn't even use the registry part. Stay away from it on windows 7! (see for instance http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=27682 or http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=22226&st=0&p=138643&hl=+windows%20+task%20+scheduler&fromsearch=1&#entry138643).

Sounds like you need a reinstall or repair.

To that I would say BS. You have no control over what programs like cceaner do. All I did was have it clean by IE temporary files and LRU documents and it screwed up my system.

Do you know how defraggler or diskkeper or other third party software of that ilk work under the cover that you can say with confidence - I know what I am doing is good enough?

I have use 3rd party difraggers and Windows 7 built in, one after the other and I couldn't tell which one is better. Run W7 defrag and then check with 3rd part and got a small amount of fragmentation. Then I would run the 3rd party defrag and check with W7 defrag and showed a small amount of fragmentation. My conclusion was that the two programs do a defrag different not better. The 3rd party defraggers do have colorful little boxes jumping around if you care to watch. Windows 7 defrag took about 2 minutes longer. I removed the 3rd party defragger and stuck with Windows 7 built in. Windows 7 knows Windows 7. I have also notice that Windows 7 doesn't get fragmented as much as older operating systems. For those that just have to tweak I would recommend using Window 7 to do it not another program. At the top of every page is our Tutorials which will show all kinds of things you can do with Windows 7. They are the best tutorials I have ever found for Windows 7. They are not really tweaks but more of teaching learning thing.
