Latest Updates.... 1 Failed. Happen to You?

Today Wednesday 10.27.2010 I ran windows update ( run it every morning ).

It said their was 4 updates... well today was the first time I every had an issue.

One update Failed Installation... but I just hit try again and it installed.

The update is for #2388210 = Application Compatibility Update for Windows XP Professional x64 edition, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Embedded Standard 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2: October 2010 .

Since this is the first time an updates ever failed, I was just curious if this is happening to any of you!

This is the problem. Do not install automatically. Set to notify and you do the installing. When there are many and a restart is necessaary conflicts occur. Set update to notify and do one or two at a time.

I believe I encountered the same error message this evening while including all updates. I then followed rich46s method of installing updates and the matter was resolved IE: after the first 3 updates installed successfully I retried the failed update & it installed successfully (sometimes a reboot is required).

If all else fails follow the Microsoft link contained in the error message that states how to resolve this error.

I had the same issue on both of my machines just now. 2nd attempt at the failed one succeeded.

I had the same updates. One at a time a no problem. Set the updater to notify.

yep happens here too, especially with updates that require a reboot...nothing to worry about . Usually on the second run it succeeds.

It's not so much as to the number of updates but it's the size of the update.
I usually download all the updates sized Kb first, then do the MB sized ones separately.
The optional ones I read to see if I really need or use it and if not I hide it.
This is just the way I do business and haven't any problems with downloads. IMHO

Happened to me aswell but I was Installing 3 other updates at the time, No big deal, Got It second time round.

It did happen to me in all my three computers. On the second try the failed update installed.

And strangely, on my primary desktop with Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit, when I booted yesterday night, I received a dialog box saying " Your copy of Windows is not genuine " Duh.............

How can a genuine retail copy distributed by a MS distributor and purchased from a reputed retailer with a certificate of authenticity and resident in the PC since Dec 2009 suddenly become non-genuine!!!!!! In fact during the promotional offer, I got a "genuine" Reebok watch shipped by Microsoft India. ( that watch, none-the-less, was not even worth the cost of my morning breakfast )

The only change in the PC is the abovesaid latest updates. The last software I installed was the latest version of Speccy.

I presume the cloud will pass as mysteriously as it appeared. Keeping my fingers crossed though. Oh, my computer ! Oh, Microsoft ! ( and if these fail Oh, God! ) Take mercy on the poor souls who reposed faith on you !

yep same here second time round ok what i do in future is install them one at a time if possible

Same here. I installed all 4 manually and one didn't go. Tried it again, and, bingo.

Ususualy if there are incompatible updates they are makerd as such somehow and windows update then is smart enough to install one set before continuing with another. I'm guessing that that last update was not properly labeled as needing to be installed seperately like usual.

I had the same issue. I think the problem/issue was that one of the updates had to be installed fisrt before the one that failed to install could install.... if that makes sense

Anyways, once the other updates were installed the failed one installed without incidence. I've seen this before so it was no big deal.

Same thing on both PC's.
When I installed Win 7 on the wife's laptop a few months ago it gave me 48 updates. Since this was a new install I just let it fly and all 48 installed in one shot. I was expecting a big crash but all installed OK. So you just never know what you get.

Test driving a (New) refurbished laptop from Sam's Club.
Looked at updates and had 52 updates to install so I said what the heck and let it install all of them at one time. Not one gliche in installation.
I have 29 days left to check this lappy out so I am running all the tests I can to make sure it is worth the buy!
