Random Win7 Freezes after Ubuntu 10.10 Install.

Yo All,

I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 running on my Asus laptop. I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows, as I will need it for work. It was installed via side-by-side and re-sized the partition

The installation of Ubuntu was flawless and works great, but now when I boot to Windows, its will randomly freeze, sometimes in 1 minute, sometimes within 10 minutes.

The only way I can solve this issue, is to either perform a disk scan from windows or restore the MBR.

The disk scan works, and Windows run fine, although If I boot Ubuntu again, run that for awhile, then boot windows again the problem returns.

Restoring the MBR works as well, though without a dualboot, its useless

I have also tried EasyBCD and replaced GRUB with Windows boot manager, though same problems.

Any advice on this, or perhaps a known fix for this issue?

Cheers

I am having this exact same problem with my Windows 7 Home Premium on my Asus G73 laptop. The freezes only started occurring after an Install of Ubuntu 10.10. Freezes occur anywhere from 15 mins to 4 hrs. Event viewer has nothing helpful and I've ran extended memory tests.

Any updates?

Not yet, that would be worst case scenario as I bought this laptop specifically to dual-boot!

If I cant find the problem I'll eventually uninstall ubuntu and see how it goes

I installed via the Wubi method with no issues.

Not true, you are having very specific issues .. Your computer is freezing after using the wubi installer ... It would seem to me that uninstalling Ubuntu via the control panel to see if that would solve your freezing issue would be the logical first step... Just my opinion .... others will vary.. ;)

All thanks for your great input. Yes I've considered running it in a VM environment but I'll be using Blender 3d and some other heavy apps i'd rather run natively in Linux.

Tews, yes I think i'll just uninstall and try a different method for now

Well so far no freezes since uninstalling, doesn't make much sense to me but oh well. I am thinking about just installing ubuntu on a seperate hard drive from windows.

What I was going to suggest is uninstall & reinstall Ubuntu. It took me two tries to get it properly installed with no bugs for a dual boot.
