Solved Graphics Cards Heat Sinc Installation

Hi, i have just recently purchased a Palit Sonic GeForce 1GB GTX 460, it has a big fan on it but no Heat Sink.

I was thinking, would it be possible for me to take the Heat Sink and fan from my Zotac GeForce 1GB 9800GT Synergy Edition and install it on my New Palit GTX 460.

Have a look at my Pics. The top two are my Palit GTX 460 and the bottom ones are my 9800GT.

If not i looked at at these products and thought about buying one.

I am not sure to be honest.

See, if don't know, on the under side of the Heat sink there are raised areas that sit on top of any memory chips and other chips that need thermal padding to dissipate their heat.

Now if the memory and other chips are set in different places (Which will be most likely) the heat sink could cause some major damage if screwed on to tight or the heatsink wont touch any of those chips and they would'nt dissipate their heat properly and could eventually overheat.

Not to mention, the GPU could be off set and again, no proper contact.

If you wish, search Google for an aftermarket cooler.

What is the other card your interested in?

If you don't really want to spend extra cash then i suggest going with the second idea of a different card, depending what that card is.

It has a heat sink. The grill piece with the fins is the heat sink.

I circled the screws that hold the flat part of the sink to the GPU in red.

A know, that is off the 9800GT, think i should put that in place of my Big palit GTX 460 Fan.?

There is a heat sink there, it's under/behind the fan. There has to be, a card like that would vaporize/go up in smoke, in seconds without it. I think if you can take the plastic wind tray off without breaking it you'll see it. Actually you should be able to see the fins behind the fan without taking anything apart. Something else to consider is most of the time you'll find thermal pads under the heat sink. I have yet to remove a heat sink without damaging at least one of them, so I wouldn't recommend trying to swap a heat sink fan from one video card to another. Eespecially if they are different models from different manufacturers. The odds of it fitting are pretty slim.

Looks like a good cooler unless you were planning to go to liquid cooled.

As has been pointed out already, yes it does. If it didn't,

There is no way that card would even be useable on the desktop without one. And if it doesn't have a heatsink on it the last thing you do is try and add one, you send it back for one that does.

From what i have been reading, a few people are tryinh to get a Good Sink on them.

why don't you just purchase a pci grphics card cooler and put it next to the card much easier then destroying a new card

I should also add there is no high power gpu without a heatsink or fan you are runnig a gtx 460 that card would melt without the heatsink and fan you have one but it might be low profile

If that is the case then you contact Palit and ask them what it is supposed to have on it. If it is supposed to be like the one Hopalong linked to and it doesn't, then Palit should be making it right, no you.

BTW what kind of load temps are you getting on the card with what is on it now?

For James bond: Blood Stone on Maximum settings my GPU is sitting at 45 to 47 Degrees.
