hi all, i have a problem that i really need fixed asap. i recently had surgery and am currently in alot of pain and not that mobile. i use my WMC via XboX to help me deal with all of it. however it now freezes every time i go into the video section. the music, movie and everyother section works fine. on the PC it freezes immediately and on the xbox it gives you about 10 seconds before freezeing. done the steps here:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...?prof=required

the problem persists on a clean boot.

Here are a few things you can do to reset Windows Media Center and hopefully remove some problems. Although it can also be a registry error.

1. You can try setting up Windows Media Center again. Tasks>>>Settings>>>General>>>Windows Media Center Setup>>>Run Setup Again.

2. Go to Control Panel, make sure its on the Large icons view. Go to Programs and Features, on the left hand side panel, click at "Turn windows Features on or off" look for "Media Features", expand it then uncheck Windows Media Center. Reboot the computer and this time re-enable Windows Media Center by rechecking the Windows Media Center checkbox you unchecked earlier.

3. There is also this small Utility from The Windows Club called FixWin that can make you flush Windows Media Center's database and hopefully, eliminate some errors.

nvm figured out u meant to go into WMC and do that. the set up had 0 effect.

my dad whos better with my computer also thinks it may be a registry issue but ive run like 3 different registry fixers and no luck with it improving. the only times it has improved even briefly was when i deleted lord of the rings online which got it working fine for about a hour. then i uninstalled a windows framework update and it was fine for about a day.

and before it it is asked no the update has not reinstalled.

edit* ran the fixwin program and it says everything is fine.

Well did you even try step no. 2???

Go to Control Panel, make sure its on the Large icons view. Go to Programs and Features, on the left hand side panel, click at "Turn windows Features on or off" look for "Media Features", expand it then uncheck Windows Media Center. Reboot the computer and this time re-enable Windows Media Center by rechecking the Windows Media Center checkbox you unchecked earlier.

FixWin on the other hand has a SPECIFIC utility that flushes Windows Media Center's database. Make sure this is the tool on FixWin you've tried.

If you don't have proper knowledge of registry cleaning procedures, don't not use registry cleaners at all because problems like this might come up. If you made any backups of those registry cleaning operations, please restore them then reboot the computer.

Or you can simply do System Restore BEFORE the day WMC started having this issue.

Those are your chances of fixing the problem.

I recommend you try all the steps I said. We'll never know unless we try.

Try uninstalling any codecs or codec packs you may have installed; if that doesn't work try opening Command Prompt as Administrator and type: sfc /scannow.

yes i did everything you posted. i have uninstalled everything that was installed around the time of the issue start. i have already reset the registry to what it was before. i used the flush widnows media option. and i have no options for a system restore to a date before the issue was happening.

oh and did the scannow thing and it said everything is fine.

I am on the same side as your dad. It might be a corrupted registry due to misguided use of registry cleaners. Even restoring registry backups will not guarantee to restore what went wrong. There is this website though:

The Green Button

Its dedicated for Windows Media Center. Maybe you can look for some answers by browsing there.

Does your registry cleaners reserve backups of the registry cleaning operations??? Might as well try to restore those, reboot then see if it goes any better. I think most registry cleaners have backup options. I use registry cleaners but I am careful and I reserve registry backups if needed.

Have you tried malware scans to see if a virus or something is causing this??? People on this forum will recommend you to use Malwarebytes but that might take some time to update.

If these options were to fail as well, the most practical solution would be a fresh reinstall of the operating system.

to be honest the only time i have ever messed with the registry is when videos stopped showing up in the video folder to which i was given stuff to put into word pad and save a .reg file and run. it fixed the problem and that was about 2-3 months before this problem.

Yes, its possible to create new .reg files from Wordpad or Notepad to replace what might have gone missing or damaged in the Registry but we can't be sure which key, specifically should we trace this problem into. Its possible to fix but its not easy.
