DirectX9 AND 11..affect anything ?

I attempted to install Need For Speed Most Wanted, and it said I didn't have DirectX.

I've read to install DirectX9, but I'm afraid it can alter my DirectX11. Battlefield 1942, ePSXe emulator, it has been frustrating making all my classics run fine.

I'm on 64-bit OS before anyone provides the good DirectX link..

Is there a sure fire restore point I can use..? Isn't there a DirectX9.0a b c and such..? Sorry..not sure where DirectX issues belong

Think this sums it up pretty well,

5 - Update your Direct X files - Contrary to popular belief, just because Windows 7 is DX11 capable doesn’t mean it has the latest DX9 files!!! Most game issues can be fixed by simply updating the DX files.

No it won't mess anything up, and yes your game will then work.

You need both. DX9 games need DX9.

Hopalong X !! What's DirectX End-User Runtime..? You're saying I have DirectX9 but not in full..? I really hope the install will go thru.

I should try your advice first, but I REALLY hope I don't have to specify correctly which folder it needs to install to.

That is the dowloader link Click Run and follow prompts to download. DirectX 9 will install itself.

1. 1. Click the Download button on this page to start the download, or choose a different language from the drop-down list and click Go.
   2. Do one of the following:
      • To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
      • To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.

You don't have to do anything but click the link and it will do the rest. No need to specify anything.

Also, did you look at the link stormy posted for a better understanding of DX11 and it's relationship to older versions?

At any rate just follow Hopalong X's instructions and all should be good

Like they always say, always update when you receive an error. That usually solves 75% of the problems, if not, reboot.

In your case, just install what you're missing, your files will be updated, and if they're the latest, they won't be overwritten.

Ahh..it asked me where to extract. So I dedicated a folder for it on the Desktop.

Now I have 157 .cab files..

EDIT: I missed DSETUP.dll, dsetup32.dll, dxdllreg_x86.cab, dxupdate.cab and DXSETUP.exe.

I can run setup ? It's good for the 64-bit, eh ?

Yes it is good for 64bit.

Click download then click save it will automatically install it.

Delete all the files on desktop from the download.

Also be aware that simply installing a DirectX update does not guarantee success in running games. That's just one aspect of the equation you don't have to worry about – you know your DirectX files are up to date.

A friend says Windows 7 won't even allow DirectX9.0c alone to get installed, to set XPSP3 compatibility mode on Autorun.exe and/or Setup.exe. I really hope I get this installed. Underground 2 runs like a dream.

The Nov update is problematic, but as you noted, you used the June update so no problem. Now... since the June update is saying your files are up to date.... no updates will occur.

Bottom line.... your DirectX files are up to date.

Please ask your friend to provide proof of this by providing a link where it says that. Microsoft constantly updates ALL DirectX files.

Since your DirectX files are updated I suggest you look somewhere else for your game issue. You should have a look through this guide.... Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues

The game installer still claims I don't have 9.0c, I'll see if switching compatibility mode on the install will do.

EDIT: And the screenshot I uploaded is the Web Installer I tried first, that's said to be broken.

I forgot to mention that a lot of older games - Need For Speed - Most Wanted have trouble running on both Vista and Windows 7, especially a 64-bit OS!!!

Sorry but Need For Speed - Most wanted was released in 2005 - Need for Speed: Most Wanted - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Not saying it can't be run, but I'm not surprised to see it's having problems. Again, especially on a 64-bit OS.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I've been prompted to install DirectX 9 while installing some games. One of my game Cd's came with DirectX 9 on it, so all I had to do was click yes when prompted and the games installer installed it. Actually I think all it did was update a few files. It didn't break anything as far as I can tell and my newer DirectX 10 games still work. What I do is download the redistributable version of DirectX. Then I extract it to a folder and save that to a USB thumbdrive. In that folder I run the DXSETUP.exe file to install DirectX. I do the same thing for IE, Windows media player, etc. It's just easier and more convenient and a lot quicker to install them from a flash drive than go to windows update.
