Uhh, I have to wonder why they insist on the premium price?

Who is going to move from Xp, Linux or Vista if its too expensive?

Hell even an early adopters discount would be nice...

Imagine if Microsoft becomes the next GM? You'd think they'd start becoming more humble instead of ignoring their own greed which was a big downfall of the banking industry. Lower prices for 7 SHOULD be the order for the day considering Vista was a disater for their reputation despite finally getting it right since SP1 and now SP2.

May be we should sign a petition to Microsoft, considering they are building 7 based on our feedbacks.

Pricing is the biggest deterrent for most people when adopting Vista, and it still is. If MS wants more sale and less piracy, a much lower pricing model should be adopted. At a lower price, XP-users will more than likely flock to use Windows 7

So, do we actually know what the price will be?

And that's the real question. We don't know. What we do know is that Dell is fishing for a lower price. They are trying real hard to manipulate the pricing with this pre-emptive strike.

Do you have any idea what Dell pays for OEM Vista. Rumor I heard was Home Premium OEM for Dell was under $60. What are they crying about?

No-one knows for sure the exact price of what all the 7 OS are going to be on the final release, but I would imagine that Ultimate will be at around $300 "Retail".
So I'm going to see if they have the Upgrade version like they did with Vista for half price ($150) & upgrade it to itself like in Vista! :p

I think an upgrade version will work as long as you have a copy of a previous Win OS. This has worked in the past for me with XP.:p

Windows will upgrade to itself...this is where the double install of Windows 7 comes into effect so you can do a clean installation of Windows 7 without upgrading from a previous OS using the upgrade DVD.
This method worked with Vista & I see no reason why this wouldn't also work with Windows 7.
But if all else fails I CAN upgrade from Vista Ultimate if I have too to get the discounted price. ;)

More info on this method at Windows Secrets.
Get Vista upgrade, never pay full price

"Use Vista's 'upgrade' version to clean-install "

The secret is that the setup program in Vista's upgrade version will accept an installed copy of XP, W2K, or an unactivated copy of Vista itself as evidence of a previous installation.

Too much.

This is definitely M$'s downfall. If they were to price the Ultimate version at around, say $150-$200, think how many people would upgrade to it! And give Professional a nice discount when purchased in bulk. Hell, I would buy 7 Ult at $200, even $250!

I agree with LordBob75. If MS bring the price down to Asian level for everyone, they will see an unprecedented sale. Asian don't necessary buy pirated products or make them, we will pay as long as it is REASONABLE by our standard. After all Asians occupy at least 2/3 of the consumer market. Ain't it time to tap into?

How do you figure what is a good price? An OS is used on an almost daily basis. You'll probably get a good 3 years of service out of Win 7. MS offers an upgrade from Vista or XP that is very discounted from Retail.

Why is everyone stuck on the retail price? The OEM price is in the range that everyone is admitting they would be willing to pay. Anyone who is in this forum should have enough knowledge to purchase OEM. Or better Upgrade version.

Of course all of this is based on rumored pricing. No one has seen the actual pricing. Dell is just fishing for lower prices to help out on their meager margins.

Hi all

Nowadays when you can get a COMPLETE computer with an OS already installed in it for around 300 - 350 USD why bother with BUYING an OS at a HIGHER price than for the computer alone.

The OS "Upgrade" edition at least will have to be much cheaper than the projected 300 USD or so.

Cheers
jimbo

I think where the problem lies here is M$ have made us all go WOW!! this is Great!.... and now they Know we are all going to/ have been going round telling everyone how how good it its.... thus forcing/using Phycology sales pitching without us realising with the end result in a lot of people muttering im going to buy it when its released

I think now the only solution to get reductions and offers in prices is to now go round saying yes Se7en is WOW! "BUT!" its way too expensive for what it is.... not worth the money ect ect

Fight back at MS and watch them back down!

This is Dells first strike before the prices are sent out to get them sefl's a better price. I'm betting that a Microsoft employee has already contacted Dell saying if you lower your voice we will give you a better deal on pricing. So then Dell can increase the prices of its systems stating its the cost of Windows 7 that adds to our machines, and they could then blame Microsoft for not being about to sell crappy hardware.
Don't get me wrong I've had a lot of their servers and desktops. Their servers always work well the stuff they sell to the average user sucks big time.

Unfortunately , the whole interview doesn't seem to be on that link.

I believe the point Darrell Ward was making is that Dell ( and the other oem's ) need to hit certain retail price points for their products.

You can be sure they have done plenty of research to establish the prices customers will stomach.

They try to reduce the prices of the parts they buy in - by as little as a cent ( they need millions of parts).

An increase in the cost of the o/s - by only a few dollars - means cutomers will get lower spec. machines at those price points.

A greater proportion goes to microsoft - a smaller proportion to the hardware.

Unless, of course, there is a change to the o/s price currently proposed.
