R.I.P. Microsoft Office.

No. no... this is a no no to me... I WILL NEVER use the cloud... who can guarantee me that my data will never get lost, corrupted or hacked by some liveless nerd who likes to stole information... who will ever guarantee that my data will be more secure than in my desktop or laptop? I had never an attack on any of my systems until now, and I will never have (simply because 3rd world countries are not for hackers interest...)...

I don't trust on the cloud, just because I cannot mannage my data localy as I actually do, our data can be seen by anyone that managges the cloud, and even used against us, remember that there are many **cough** governments that are interested on know what we got on our PC's, what we do and store...

No to the cloud, yes to free computing

See ya!!!! :D

Just a few questions from me:
- anyone here do internet banking? Or even online shopping? Are you worried about security?
- when was the last time you couldn't get an internet connection and how long did that last?
- when was the last time your preferred mail server went down?

So what's the big deal? Security? Connectivity? Reliability? I'm sure they're all covered.

I don't expect many consumers will be using the cloud but for businesses it would make perfect sense.

No on the online banking. I have a seperate checking account that I use exclusively for amazon, ebay, pay pal, etc. I live in the sticks and sometimes I think the hampsters in the wheels get really tired and I lose service all the time. :)

We have a number of Cloud applications at work and they are horrendously slow compared to local apps, especially in peak Internet times.

What Microsoft are after is a steady revenue stream instead of revenues just when new versions are released. Office on the web is currently free as they sucker people in before they announce an hourly fee (IMO).

It probably won't be long before they want us all to have dumb terminals and use an online OS as well.

If Office ever dies I will stick with whatever is the last version I can install and use locally.

Answer 1 OK but that's for single transactions -- it's not about actually doing continuous work for example developing presentations etc. People don't in general have problems with "Transactional Data" such as accessing a Database / SQL server etc. For example accessing Cash via an ATM is "Transactional Data".

This is totally different to things like creating Multimedia, editing documents, developing applications, testing products etc etc.

Answer 2 --ever travelled fairly long distances by trains / ships etc and want to do some work on a computer. These mostly don't have WiFi available and when they do the speed is usually so dismally slow as to make anything other than a basic Net surf unuseable.

Answer 3 Mail server went dows two days ago --it happens. Sometimes it "goes down" because of Upgrades etc etc -- even a Planned Outage is still an outage. Hardware / software in a cloud situation will need to be updated far more regularly due to the sheer volume of traffic using it.

Cheers

In most instances, whether in cyberspace or life, pitfalls have advantages that attract the unwary, and those who believe that they can outwit the forces/odds that lurk in the bottom of the holes. Those who actually have the wits or wisdom to not be harmed by such devices, are those who avoid them altogether. There is no advantage of submitting one's personal data to the trust of unknown persons or forces that outweight any minor disadvantage or managing for one's self.

Whether in personal life or business, one should know and trust those who handle their info/affairs.

I agree with those who doubt the cloud. Sorry, it just isn't going to happen for me. I know they (who ever they are) will tell you the cloud is safe. My answer to that is B.S. The cloud is still a computer system, hence, once it becomes popular enough the bad people will be looking at a way to bring it down, and again, sorry, albeit I have no doubt they will accomplish just that.
Ditto.

ditto again.
HIPPA might frown on the cloud and financial institutions are afraid enough of
their data that many have completly closed inhouse lans that are never never
connected to the internet.

So there. :)

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
I think this already happened because with Skydrive you can edit some documents already in the cloud. You can't do everything that the retail versions can do.. but enough for you to be pleased.

You can even add new documents like word files, power point, excel, and even onenote files..
I believe you can also share files with your friends as well.

Now Microsoft is putting together Office 365 which is aimed and businesses and that's all in the cloud.

Hi there
I think some people get carried away with "New Technology" -- for example people can spend almost the whole day twiddling away with their thumbs texting to their 97,000 Virtual Friends on Rubbishbook or whatever but when they actually have to speak to a REAL person or address an audience then they haven't got a clue and probably exhibit the Social and Contact skills of a horse and that's being disrespectful to the Horse.

The use of this type of technology really stops people from making proper and understandable corporate type of communications when they need to -- some Word documents I have to look at are so badly mis-spelled and put together they aren't fit for anything but the waste bin. Written and spoken communication skills were actually FAR FAR superior 30 years ago.

In other cases some applications need to run in SECURE networks that have no Internet connection whatever.

You could run these in an Internal Cloud but that's conceptually the same as a server in any case.

I think that whatever the convenience of the Net etc local applications will continue to play an important part until we don't need computers anymore.

Cheers

This is part of what Net Nuetrality is all about. The Cloud. I kind of understand why they want parts NN now. But I still do not agree with it. I do not agree with forcing the cloud on the general population either.

But, the General Population will see it as a novelty at first and not see any problems with it, the whole
"I have nothing to hide" Syndrome
. and that Syndrome is a HUGE issue in our society, it is what builds tyrants.

Just because you have nothing to hide, doesn't mean you should agree to an invasion of privacy.
can you say TSA, anyone?

The cloud, in and of itself, can become, a huge invasion of privacy when you no longer have Control of Your Own Data.

Sad, but so very, very true. Even so called stories from the wire services contain grammatical and spelling errors. I don't know if it's haste, lack of proofing, or just an "I don't care atttitude", but it's disturbing.

Of course, I'm saying this with only one year of college in my long life. :D

So, Microsoft is going to dissolve the Exchange division of it's operations? I think not. Exchange 15 is already being planned and I don't see them stopping there.

Sharepoint too.

Correct Microsoft is not going to get rid of Exchange; however we are talking about Office and Outlook (client). Microsoft wants to completely get rid of Outlook (client) and use web based clients only. That move is completely apparent in Exchange 2010 where the web based outlook is fantastic.

I agree with OWA being pretty good.
Problem is, Archive Support. This may not sound like a big deal.
Companies would then need to invest in HUGE data stores to accommodate OWA Archives.
So, double or even triple plus on multiple mailbox sizes is going to be a huge killer.

Or, you will be telling some clients they are crap out of luck and have to save individual emails (HUGE PAIN IN THE A$$).

This would be a big step backwards in my opinion.

The whole point is to utilize the huge local hard drive free space for archiving on individual machines and train them in data back up. If the inforamtion is that sensitive, they shouldn't be archiving locally anyway.

Humm, I guess I don't see the issue with this, I have one account that has 2000 users on 1 Exchange Server with 10 years of email on it and complete archives. Nothing expensive about it $10,000 server including all the disk space and $8000 server for archives. Total is $18,000 for one company that is a drop in the bucket for most, especially when you look at payroll being 45.5 million a month.
