windows live messenger freezes when message windows pop up

I'm having this annoying problem with windows live messenger. it launches ok, and I can use it in the usual way, but if a message window pops up, either by my actions or those of friends on my list, the whole program freezes leaving it unusable.

any help would be appreciated.

OS: windows 7 professional 64bit
WLM Ver: 2011 (build 15.4.3508.1109)

Hello there, why don't you try to do a repair on the program? are you using the latest version? using any add-on? Msn plus? a-patch?

I did try doing a repair last night out of sheer hope that it would help in some way, then a full uninstall/reinstall and it didn't fix anything. I am using the latest version, and no, I haven't installed any addons, or patched anything.
