hey all, I recently purchased an Amd Athlon 630 X4. When I installed it, I tried to boot into windows but it just wouldn't work. It would get up to starting windows and would just do nothing.

things I have done:
Updated BIOS
Reinstalled OS with my dual core in then installed my quad core
Ive played around with the voltages in the BIOS but still no luck
Although I tried under clocking it by changing the multiplier in the BIOS from 14 to 12
and then reduced the voltage by 0.050. And that's the only time it boots up, and even then its not stable when I stress test it.
I tried updating my BIOS again using Q flash, for the first time I successfully managed to boot into windows with all the default settings, but as soon as I restarted the same problem but with a quick BSOD I couldn't read and then the PC restarting again. When I put my dual core everything works fine.

System specs

My dual core is an AMD athlon 64 X2 5000+
4gb ddr2 - 2 dell sticks and 2 zeppalin
Ati radeon 4870
GA mA770 ud3- rev 2.0
OCZ stealxstream 600w
Windows 7 - 64bit :)

Guys I will really appreciate your help :) Thanks.

Which revision of the motherboard is it? 2.1/2.0 or 1.0? They all pretty much support the same CPU's, but the 1.0 has a different bios than the 2.0/2.1.

Though you upgraded the BIOS, does Gigabyte list the Athon II X4 630 as being compatible with your board?

Just read cpu compatibility.

All three revisions of the board (2.1, 2.0 and 1.0), support the x4 630 in both steppings (C2 and C3) it is available in,

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM2+ - GA-MA770-UD3 (rev. 2.1)

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM2+ - GA-MA770-UD3 (rev. 2.0)

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM2+ - GA-MA770-UD3 (rev. 1.0)

All three support DDR2, with the biggest difference between the 1.0 and the 2.0/2.1 is the 1.0 has the 770/SB700 chipset where the 2.0/2.1 both have the 770/SB710 chipset. You can see the differences between the South Bridges here,

AMD 700 chipset series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

you would probably have to ask Gigabyte to find out what other differences there are between the different revisions beyond that.

Along as the boards have at least the following bios,

1.0 - F8
2.0 - FD
2.1 - FG

then it should just be a matter of dropping it in and go.

cogman one quick question, in all the things you listed doing, did you remember to reset the bios (clear CMOS) when switching the CPU's?

You list 4 GB of ram with I assume 2 different sets (and not all 4 sticks different), if that is the case try it with only one set installed. It could be that the memory controller in the new CPU is disagreeing with the mixed memory.

System of elimination would suggest you try only the dell modules also. I'd suggest restoring BIOS to defaults, and also before you flash to restore board to defaults as well (no OC'n, overvolts, etc).

Have you tried booting into any other OS apart form 7.

tinyXP boot disk or ubuntu for exapmle, even maybe safe mode on 7.

Just a thought as you can boot your PC. It does power on, and sustains the power without switching off the machine.

Is there any indication in the POST that the hardware is failing.

You have checked the compatability with GIGABYTE and unless this is a socket AM2+ board then it should work.

I dont think you have mentioned if this board is an AM2+ or AM3 because this CPU won't work on a AM2+ mobo.

Im all out of suggestions, my step would be to declare the CPU a dud.

I will give you the link to your mobo again just of interest. As you can see the first table is for the AM2+ and the second table is for the AM3.

I dont think you have mentioned if this board is an AM2+ or AM3 because this CPU won't work on a AM2+ mobo.

Are you sure about that? AM3 CPU's are more than capable of running on an AM2+ board (some AM2 as well if there has been a bios update for them). Don't forget that AM3 CPU's have dual memory controllers in them so that they an work with either DDR2 or DDR3. It is AM2+ and AM2 that cannot work on AM3 (P.S. you also contradict yourself by posting a link to his motherboard that clearly shows that the board will run both AM2+ and AM3 CPU's).

As for that particular CPU work on an AM2+ board, check my specs. Exact same CPU running quite happily on an AM2+ motherboard (and I could drop in a x6 if so desired).

cogman double check the CPU for any bent or missing pins. It could just be that you got a defective CPU, rare but it does happen. Only way to find that out is to test it in another motherboard.
