Excellent stuff. Good find jfar and everlong.
If it is some kind of ear trumpet then who is she talking to? The guy in front of her is away and wouldn't be able to hear her talking.
Unless it's a combined ear trumpet and megaphone and that seems unlikely.
Also, you would have to be pretty close to the person talking for it to pick up their voice.

I was laughing, I sent the link to my brother and he came back with, yeah and if you look hard enough
into the shop window she is walking past , you will see them making the moon landing film for the Apollos.

remember this is a MOVIE. A silent movie. The actors knew that if they spoke in a "hidden" fashion nobody would see it or hear it in the theater. This person was using a hearing device, and was speaking to someone off camera. It's not like thats a real street in a real noisy city. Its a quiet closed set and you can hear people talking.

Also, movie cameras were large and heavy back then. They did not just carry them around and tape scenes. There is no way that they just happened to "catch" a time traveler on film.

I think I've got the answer folks -- at least to what the device is. We still don't know who she was talking to, though. Check this out, found on YouTube:

"The Western Electric 34A carbon hearing [aid] was manufactured by the Western Electric Company in 1925. The Western Electric company marketed these early hearing aids under the 'Audiphone' trade name."

PS It just occurred to me that she may not have been talking at all. Maybe she was eating/chewing something -- which is what made her mouth move. And further, when she turned and looked at the camera -- and looked a little surprised or shocked, maybe she was just a little surprised/embarassed at being caught in the moment, the way we sometimes are when we least expect it. . .

Someone posted this as a comment to the ipod above, I didn't check it out but I well believe it will be true.


I googled the western electric 34A carbon hearing aid and found that:
It weighed 2lbs and was 7 3/4 inches long, there is no way that woman or man in drag could have held that thing, nor does this pitiful attempt at a debunk address the fact that the person was talking into a supposed hearing aid! The ear piece should be in the ear and the box in the pocket... Muppet! XD
