My PC flashes on and off rapidly when power is pressed

Hi

Starting Saturday , whenever I press my power button to turn on my computer it rapidly turns on and off. The LED lights on my fans are about half the brightness they regularly are. As well the lights from my audio card flash on and off. This leads me to believe its an issue with my power supply. I did some searching and came across THIS thread but unlike in that particular case, I can get my PC to turn on and run perfectly smooth after about 3-7 trys of flicking the switch on my power bar and trying to boot my PC. Having this though makes me think it may be an issue with my motherboard. I have tried checking the connections inside my pc, a different wall socket, and a different power bar.

Here is a video I managed to take with my iPod

Thank you for any help or suggestions

Hi! Shimmer93, welcome to 7F :)

The exact same symptoms I was having on my XP box, It took a new PSU to correct the problem.

If you don't have a couple of high powered cards installed you can get away with one that is rated for 500w. $45USD

If you do, go up to 700 or 800w. At the least match what you already have.

Good Call. I would also agree that you are getting low volatge from your Ppower supply thru your motherboard.
If it continues you can do a lot of damage to your other hardware.

Thanks for the help everyone. Ill try getting a new power supply but it may take a few days to get one. If i remove a few components from my PC (example: remove sound card and use on-board sound) may that eliminate my problem or make my damages less? As well if when i can get my PC to boot, should i just keep it on since i seem to not be running into any issues once i can get it running.

By the way my Current power supply is 700-Watt and my components should be in my profile from entering them upon registration and I'm planning on upgrading to a Core i7 and a better video card soon if that's any use to you guys.

Again thank you for all the help

It will not eliminate the problem The PSU has already started to head South :(

You could leave it on, but what happens if, when you come back to it the machine is dark which means the PSU has died.

The first thing you have to overcome is the fact that the OS had been shut-down improperly, and you will have to get that straightened out.

Sounds like you will have to upgrade to a higher output, but that depends on exactly what parts you will be installing for the upgrade.
That is a call only you can make.

Your welcome Shimmer, That's good news! She looks like a beauty.

I don't see any big maker names in your systemspecs so I get the feeling you built this yourself? So you should know your way around, and how to act once inside the box.

Just take your time if you think about it you may want to take some pix to help you remember how it looked before you start taking things apart. especially the plugs.

While your waiting you may want to familiarize yourself on how the old one's coming out, and the new one'll go in.
Plug "Installing a PSU" into your search box.

You did check to make sure the plugs matched, didn't you?

I will be back when i get it to write about my results :)
You better or we'll have to send the Tron Police after you...:p

May the Good Luck be with you!

Steve

That is good news Shimmer!
I tried to think of anything to do or watch out for after a PSU install, and the only thing I could think of was to watch for any signs of overheating.

To officially mark this solved you have to go to the red triangle in the upper right corner, and ask one of the Admins or Mods to have it marked solved.
