[what]Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB976902)

Today it came thru my official updates on my Windows7 x86, but shows unmarked, so I consider it's an optional update not realy neded. I always hide this kind of unmarked updates, to never recive notification. Hoever may be I'm rong and this kind of updates are need it.

The reason some updates are unchecked is because they may conflict with other updates being installed at the same time. I always installed those alone.

I don't know if it was this specific update or one of the others, but after the Tuesday updates I now have a delayed Windows 7 start when booting. When I boot up and after the BIOS screen, Windows 7 would stat to load immediately. Now, I get a flashing cursor and blank screen for about 30 seconds before Windows starts to load.

I tried System Restore and it could not complete.

I think the paranoid users over reacted when MS released that update in October but did not release the KB article. In their paranoid mines they thought MS was pulling a sneak attack, when in fact is was a simple mistake of not publishing the KB article in a timely manner. The update was pulled and has now been released along with the article.
SP1 should be out soon and this update is needed to install SP1.

Hey Fireberd - Sorry to hear about that.

Sometimes when the System Restore will not complete when run from within Windows you can use the F8 at boot to get the Windows Boot Menu, and then choose "Last Good Configuration" to restore.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the information everybody. I normally check on the ones that say "Cannot be removed" It sounds like it's okay huh? I will wait one more day and install it. Sound like you will need it for SPs.

All the best to my old (and new) friends here at sevenforums

Is there a significance to this update (976902) arriving unchecked?

If it's an Optional or Recommended update, why is it not grouped in that area?
If it's not Optional, why is it unchecked in Important Updates?

Yes it was prematurely released on windows update. The kilobyte article that goes with it wasn't up on the net yet either. When people went looking to see what it was they got a page cannot be found. Then they discovered it couldn't be uninstalled in the normal fashion. Conspirator's were up in arms that Microsoft was trying to pull a fast one, yada yada yada. I installed it the first time around too. I've done a clean install since then and installed it again. My machine hasn't called me a pirate or self districted so I guess its safe. :sarc: :)

A few days ago peopele sayed to me that it's need it, becouse I may not recive SP1 without it. Know people are saying the oposite:
You don't even need the KB KB976902. Service pack fetches it.
Nice post, Zardoc! :)

Indeed, the SP1 RTM(?) does install 976902:

I didn't install this update, and it still appears in my updates notification window. Does it need to be installed, or can I just disregard it?
