It could be something to do with the upcoming SP1 for Windows 7. The fact it cannot be removed says that it is going to be required if you wish to recieve & install further updates.

If your copy of Windows 7 is legit (purchased/pre-installed on new machine) then you shouldn't have anything to worry about

Normally wouldn't windows just say hey i'm part of windows genuine advantage?
If you dont install me when GA checks in you will not be genuine and none of your MS products wont work anymore?

Also thought it was for upcoming SP 1 or IE 9 beta, didn't pay attention to the cannot be uninstalled part.

But hey if were headed towards the cloud anyway our OS is only as good as the money in our wallet on a month to month basis anyway

MS needs to be more transparent Jeez! You dont release an uninstallable update without proper documentation, a lot of people will hold this update off till the notes are available. Though if someone wants to get rid of this, i think system restore would be the way out.

Or image your win7 install before installing this update.

Edit: I believe this update is included in the leaked sp1, its required to install sp1.

It comes via automatic updates. I just installed it and it hasnt wrought any havoc.

I installed it also after making a restore point for good measure.
It is MS or it wouldn't be there.
I always check them before installing.
Seemed legit to me.

I like to see/read the documentation. The fact that there was none raised some flags. I Googled this and found some speculation on what it was, but so far, no facts. Apparently it's raised a lot of questions since it's risen to #73 on items researched on Google in the past hour.

My general practice is to wait a couple days before I install any update to see if it causes any widespread problems. I am choosing not to install this patch until MS verifies it in some way.

I've found some articles today concerning this update. But nothing concrete.

I phoned my boy to warn about possible consequences installing this but he had already installed it nothing went wrong but he hasn't restarted his PC yet.
Personally I am going to pass on this for a couple of weeks before installing.

Tech Arp seems OK it's all speculation for now but i was thinking the same thing as soon as i saw the update.
When Microsoft had the WAT update earlier in the year it was easy to remove it by googling for info.

Relax, it's the servicing stack update. We've seen it all before in Vista.

That said, I don't think it was supposed to be released today. Looked around Microsoft Download Center, it's nowhere to be seen. Perhaps someone clicked the wrong button?

There are some new, official!, federated search connectors though, right fom the cow's udder.
