Back up all data, Boot the installer, choose Custom Install, use Drive Options to format Ultimate partition then install Pro there. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

Installer should configure Dual Boot. If not, use EasyBCD 2.0 to Add XP, accept boot files, save, restart.

There is a workaround to change Ultimate to Professional if you have a lot invested in the install and would rather not have to reinstall programs and data.

thx, gonna try install and one question, what to do with system reserved space.just ignore and install win 7 over win ultimate or not....

Best to keep SysReserved partition for dual booting; it also places the Repair Console on F8 Advanced Boot tools menu. If it remains marked Active the installer will update the boot files stored there.

So I would format only the Win7 partition itself, then click Next to begin install on it.

If you want to post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive map with listings, using Snipping tool in Start Menu, we will check it over to make sure you're good to go.

Hello neverall.

I would marke sure the System Reserved is marked Active from within XP before you start the install; have a look at this tutorail at the link below for the information.

The first thing I would do is to convert the C: Extended partition / Logical drive to a Primary partition using the outline listed in Option Four of this tutorial at the link below.

Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

You don't have a System Reserved partition to be concerned with.

can you please explain: That's it, now remove the PWBD from the ODD and at the upper left corner at "General" click "Exit" to close the Partition Wizard program and restart Windows.

This is the way to close the Partition Wizard program and to start Windows.

Remove the boot disk from the CD/DVD drive and at the upper left of the Partition Wizard program click General then Exit to close the program and restart Windows.

I believe you have to boot the Partition Wizard CD you create by burning an ISO to a CD of the file you download from this link below, I don't think it can be done from within Windows.

That looks very good, well done; one last step, in the current Windows 7 disk management mark the C: partition as Active before you start the installation process; follow Option One steps #1 & #2 to mark the C: partition active then boot the Windows 7 installation disk and do a clean install to complete the process.

I made an error and I edited the posts above, you do not have to step #3 at all, just start the install.

But it won't hurt anything if you do, just a wasted step; sorry. :o
