Microsoft’s overall Internet Explorer market-share decreased again in January 2011.

Worldwide Market-share trackers Net Applications issued their monthly browser share report today which indicates that Internet Explorer market-share has dropped for the seventh month in a row. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer now controls 56% of the market compared to 62% a year ago and 70% in January 2009. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer market share bleed has continued for over six months as the company struggles to convince users to pick Internet Explorer for their browsing needs.

  • July 2010 – 60.74%
  • August 2010 – 60.48%
  • September 2010 – 59.62%
  • October 2010 – 59.18%
  • November 2010 – 58.44%
  • December 2010 – 57.08%
  • January 2011 – 56.00%

I think IE market share will even out at between 45% - 55%, maybe 40% if it goes really low. In a way, I think Microsoft is both unhappy yet pleased about this because at least this keeps the Department of Justice out of their hairs in regard to anti-trust and IE.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. Competition is good. As much as I support Microsoft, I don't want to see IE regain its spot as the massively-dominant-to-the-point-where-no-one-uses-the-other-choices browser.

What I am seeing over all our sites is IE holding at the steady 45% where it has been for years and Firefox (31%) losing ground every month to Chrome (18%).

The are waiting until they have removed most of the bugs and it's ready
