Australia is such a vast Continent (in UK terms) it's sometimes difficult to assess how near/far things are!

I don't think it hit as hard as they thought it would so not so much damage done

Oh, it still hit very hard. The 'saving grace' was that the cyclones landfall was between two major metropolitan cities in areas that weren't as densely populated.

One of those areas, Innisfail, was absolutely devastated 5 years ago by another cyclone and a lot of places were rebuilt to a higher code to withstand cyclones. Whilst there was still a lot of damage, thanks to the fortified rebuilding it fared considerably better than it did previously.

Other small towns however, were literally wiped out.

Had that cyclone hit either of the two major cities, then the outcome would have been a hell of a lot worse.

Floods in the East, and now bushfires in the West.

All day long, we have had choppers set up for fire fighting, in the air over our house.
A major bush fire has been raging just up the road from us. It has destroyed a number of houses, and looks like going strong during the night. People have been evacuated from their homes, with the residents of an old peoples home taken to the local shopping centre.
There are/were 3 other fires happening aound Perth, all pretty bad.

If it's not one thing, it's another.

Thanks for the caring words, Steve, Irene & Joan. Fortunately, though we are somewhat close to the Kelmscott/Roleystone fires, there is sufficient distance between us.
According to the latest news, 40 houses have been destroyed in our area.
Don't know much about the other 3 fires, but they are well away from us.
Thank God there was no loss of life. I can still see smoke, but nothing like what we had yesterday.
Hopefully the roads have been opened to the local residents.

You are right, Steve. It is a blessing in disguise nobody has been killed.
Yes, there have been injuries, and a fireman was hit by a fire-truck, according to the latest updates i just checked out.
Tally of homes destroyed is now 59. This morning the winds got stronger again, so the arial water bombing is back in full swing, judging by the amount of choppers flying overhead.
The cops have all roads leading into the danger zone blocked off. Even when all finally settles down, they are staying to prevent looters (read scum) from entering the area. All i can say about looters and firebugs, is they make me so angry, cause if i printed my true feelings, i will be banned for sure.

Just came across this vid on youtube which gives you an idea what the poor buggars up the road are going through. The music may/may not be appropriate, but the vid sure is.

This lady is a very good friend of mine, but works on a different project now, hence was not aware this had happened.

This is an extract from the email sent by the company's CEO.

Christine will be known to many of you – as she is a cheerful, happy to help sort of person.
Christine has lost everything - literally she has her “shirt on her back” and not much else.
The company will be making a financial contribution to assist Christine.
I would ask that you also consider making a personal contribution to help out.

We worked on a number of mine sites together and shared cabs going to/from the airport, as we live close to each other.
She shared her house with her younger sister, who had a baby girl, not long after my grandson was born.:shock:

Sure is. When it was a private company, it was very family orientated.
Then they went public, and somehow lost it, trying to maximise profits for share holders.
Problem then was, not much loyalty from the work force, causing a lot of people to find work where they would be happier.
Fortunately now, they realised their best assets are people, and are trying to change it back, making it a happier, more productive company.
