Monitor; 16 x 10 vs 16 x 9

What's the deal here, or is there one? Would a 16 x 10 have black bars when playing a HD movie?

I'm shopping for a second monitor and it seems there are very few of the 16 x 10, I found a monitor I might like and then noticed it's the 16 x 10, my current monitor is x 9 so I want the displays to look consistent. Or is this all a non-issue?

Yes, 16x10 will have black bars as just about all dvd's these days are shown in 16x9 so if you do watch a lot of films on your PC, I'd recommend a widescreen display. And if you want consistency with a new display, it would be best to go with a same size and resolution of your old display, so 16x9 and whatever your size and resolution are.

Are you adding a second screen to the 32" that is in your specs?
If the screen is smaller, like 24" or smaller, then it doesn't really matter if it's :9 or :10, as long as it has the resolution you want.
you will have the black bars when watching 16:9 content on the 16:10 screen like was mentioned above.

Yes a second screen, three would be better, haven't done any research on adding a secon video card. Plus my system is almost four years old, not sure when I'll upgrade.

I use a 24" 16:9 monitor as my main monitor, and my old 16:10 20" monitor as the second monitor. As I watch all my movies on the main monitor, having the a 16:10 resolution on the second monitor isn't a big deal as all I do is shove web pages/documents on to it to read while I'm working etc.

Depends what you're wanting to do really. If you do need a consistent size for playing games across multiple monitors etc, then getting the same ratio would be a better idea.

Pros:

More desktop 'real estate'
Better quality panels (depending on model)

Cons:

Slightly Smaller FOV for games
Black bars (not really a con tbh)
Less model choice / more expensive

16:9

Pros:

Slightly wider FOV in games
Less black bars
Wider model variety/cheaper

Cons:

Less desktop real estate
Lower quality panels



There are more pros/cons to each

I personally prefer 16:10 - But after using either for a while, you stop noticing the differences.

actually, I think you will have black bars either way. and that said, I would go taller only because I cant stand short screens, cant see enough when doing 'normal' things.

Both will have horizontal black bars if you watch anything wider than 16:9.
16:10 will have less vertical black bars on the sides when watching 4:3 programming.
HD programs are 16:9 (1.78:1), movies come in a variety of widescreen sizes, from 1.85:1 (really close 16:9) to 2.76:1 (really wide, like Ben Hur)

By "panels" I presume you mean the screen. Can you provide a link that explains why one size is better/worse quality just because of it's physical dimensions?

I presume you want a higher resolution, in the resolution drop down box, can you see higher resolutions?

What happens when you "can't" change this
