Solved Where are my Windows 7 drive icons?

From what I read in another thread here, they're supposed to be here:
C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll

But when I right click imageres.dll, there is no icon tab.

This is a 1 day old install, and I haven't deleted anything.

I've got everything set to list view, with "view hidden files, folders and drives" selected in folder options.

They're inside said imageres.dll
you can't access those icons them by simply right clicking the file
What exactly are you trying to do?

To look at the icons in C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll you need to use a resource hacker like
anolis - Release: Resourcer 0.9

Hello Monsoon,

I think you are referring to the Icons tab that is added to the right click Properties page of files (ex: imageres.dll) that contain icons after you install the free IconView program.

Oh ok, I missed the part about needing the 3rd party application.

The link had so much info in it that I just skimmed to the part where they showed how to find the icons.

This is just another thing that microsoft messed up, imo.

Of what possible use is it to disable my ability to find these icons?

There's so many issues like this that they changed for seemingly no other reason than to make the newest os seem different.

I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted.

I agree that it would be nice to have it all included in the OS by default, but then Microsoft would probably be getting antitrust lawsuits one after the other from other program development companies claiming that it's unfare for Microsoft to include it free in the OS.

Up through XP, you could change the icons for just about anything without a 3rd party application.
