Motorola Xoom to have unlockable bootloader for developers

Nice move from Motorola.

Motorola just confirmed via Twitter that the Xoom will have an unlockable bootloader to aid developers in app development. Here it is, in no uncertain terms:

"The XOOM will have an unlockable/relockable bootloader that will enable developers to access hardware for development."

Also, the full Android 3.0 (HoneyComb) SDK has been released.

Very wise move. Maybe they realised just how much influence developers can have influencing a community.

Not to mention an "open source" community can really improve a phone. And most devs. are more than willing to share their findings with the manufacturers.

Well doing it for their tablets is all well and good, but will they start doing it for their phones? Their last comment on it wasn't really a friendly one basically saying "if you don't like it, go somewhere else".

The Moto Xoom is a tablet and Honeycomb does not run on phones anyhow. For phones the last release is Gingerbread - and maybe the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich.

Well doing it for their tablets is all well and good, but will they start doing it for their phones? Their last comment on it wasn't really a friendly one basically saying "if you don't like it, go somewhere else".

Well they did it for the OG Droid, which basically lead the way for customizing in the beginning. But yeah, they pretty stopped after the OG Droid with that, but it's nice they at least did it for the XOOM.

I still think that's yet to be be confirmed/seen yet. There is info out there that points to Honeycomb can be made to run on phones, and possibly will at some point. Maybe not the older phones, but newer ones nonetheless.

Android isn't the bootloader though, which this is talking about.

I guess if you root the thing, you can run anything. But right now they announced it only for tabs.

But they never said anywhere Honeycomb would never come to certain phones either.
