Windows activates with no product key.

I recently built a new computer and forgot to order Win 7 Home premium oem. I found the original downloadeded ISO on my computer (from back when you could download it) so decided to install the OS and all the updates including service pack one with the aforementioned ISO file. When windows asked me to enter my key, I skipped this as I am waiting for my oem copy to arrive from new egg. I have a windows anytime upgrade to ultimate and decided to try that key to see if it would work. I clicked on anytime upgrade on my computer and it indicated that I needed to enter my original key first. When I went to validate windows it validated with no key entered! I look in my computer and it says windows is activated. How can this be? I don't want any problems in the future and want a legitimate installation.

Let me see if i get this straight. You installed Windows 7 Home Premium, didn't enter a key, went to anytime upgrade. introduced an Ultimate key, upgraded to Ultimate, validated and it became activated? :huh: i'm kind of confused hehe

When I went to validate windows it gave me no choice to enter a key....it went online and just validated with no key entered at all....

Yeah it's crazy...I've installed various windows editions over the years and this is a first for me

You might want to use Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder to see what key code is stored in the system & compare it to the valid ones you have on hand.

I don't have a valid product key to enter yet....this is an ISO from when win7 was first released.....i am waiting for an oem disk I bought from new egg

The fact you're using one of those pre RTM discs might also explain why some of the activation process is skipped?

This is a computer I built myself so there was nothing pre-installed. I entered no key at all as the WAU asked me to validate the original installation before I entered the upgrade key.
AFAIK....the ISO I have is a release to manufacturing, not a pre-release as I paid for the download.

if the NEW hardware you installed W7 on is fairly similar to the old one W& doesn't always think you've installed on a NEW computer so it will activate.

That's how for example you can "Clone" multiple W7 Virtual machine installations (but it's against the EULA of course in running more than ONE concouurently).
