Photo Viewer delete photo after rotation

Hi!!!! is there anyone out there that can assit me? my win 7 photo viewer does the weirdest thing!! when i view my photos and rotate them and close the viewer, they disappear from my folder where they were originally stored in. i've checked my deleted items. no luck. searched whole pc for edited files and names of files that disappeared. no luck there either. i tested it on my hubby's pc. exact same result there. please please please! i need urgent help.

Are you using the Red X on the right hand side to close the Window,if so this is the Delete Button.
Open your Recycle bin the deleted files may still be there.

Hi Kodi, thank you. but i am 100% sure i did not delete them and as mentioned i have checked the recycle bin. nothing there?

The photo viewer is supposed to autosave the last modification by default. I just rotated a few images on my own machine- after I click on the top right X to close the viwer, I see a momentary "saving" notice before the window closes. The images are still there on the hdd and on reopening, they show up as last rotated.

I suggest you run a sfc scan 3-4 times.

run this command from command prompt in the folder where the files went missing.

attrib *.* -h

Actually the file does not go missing. They simply get hidden. I was facing the same issue till i found out that these modified files were actually getting hidden.

Not sure why this is happening.
But only way right now is to unhide them.

Just enable viewing of hidden files.

Steps:

1. In the explorer window click [organize] menu item.
2. Select the [Folder and Serach Option] menu item
3. Click [View] tab.
4. Under hidden files and folder, Select "Show hidden files, folder and drive"
5. Click [Apply] and close the dialog.

You should now be able to see hidden files. Show how the rotated file attribute get changed to hidden.

Now you can right click on the file and set the properties of the file to unhide them.

Thanks NepalPro! i can now see them but they are grayed out and look sortof translucent. However how do i get windows not to hide them in the first place? As i used to rotate photos all the time with no probs?

same prob here. nobody wants to work with "show hidden files" always on. - so would be great to find out how to prevent the photo viewer from doing that.

Ta Nepalpro, but...

Great news. I can now see them and they are greyed out. Then I can fix them by doing that properties thing and 'unhide' them and they go back to normal. BUT, the problem still remains. Whenever I go to rotate new photos the same thing happens. They'll disappear without the show hidden files on or go grey then have to do the same process. How can we stop this in the first place?
Never happened with the 3000 other photos on my old computer.

We are having the same issue here. Does anyone know how to fix this so it won't hid the photo every time we rotate? Our computer was fine until it started happening yesterday.

SOLVED !!!!!!!

Spec’s:
HP Envy 17” 3D laptop, i7, 16GB, SSD 512GB, (Windows 7 Ultimate)

Step by step troubleshoot:
(don’t do it this way, this was a troubleshoot method to find the problem)
- made total backup
- factory restore (total Windows recovery to a factory default)
- check (rotating of photo’s work just fine, no problems at this point
- removing old versions of software like
o adobe packages
o java
o Office 2010 (trial)
o McAfee anti-virus software
o Skype
- Installing Office 2010
- Installing all Microsoft updates (including SP1)
- Installing new versions of adobe flash, reader, java, Skype, …
- and ……. BINGO !!! after installing McAfee Total Protection 2010 problem with rotating photo’s came back

This came really unexpected, because I have a big experience with McAfee, I use it personally, and I also sell this to my customers. I couldn’t find jet what exactly is the cause of this problem, but one thing is for sure, after removing McAfee, the problem with rotating photo’s was away.
My advice, remove the anti-virus software you use now (probably McAfee) and install some other.
Like a quick solution you can install Microsoft Security Essentials for example.

Once again, this was only a troubleshoot, you do not have to do all this, but just remove McAfee, and install something else.
I had a contact with McAfee, and I am still waiting for a response.

My wife and I each have exactly the same Windows 7 HP laptops. Both have McAfee 2010. On my laptop, as soon as i rotate or tag a photo, its attribute automatically changes to hidden (which can be recovered by following NepalPro's guidance). However, my wife's Laptop does not have the same problem.

So i don't think the issue is with McAfee, and more likely to be a Windows 7 issue. This problem started sometime in the last 2 months. Nonetheless, I'll try uninstalling my McAfee and see if anything changes.

Sir,

I am an IT professional, and I don't just write some information before double check.
My client has two new sony laptops, both Windows 7 and both McAfee.
The problem is only on one of this two.
That is why I couldn't imagine in the begining that it could be a McAfee!
BUT IT IS!!! Trust me.
Let's make it simple, delete McAfee, and see what happens.
Or even less, dissable realtime scanner, it also works.
Of course this is not a solution, but it can proove what the problem is.

Buy the way, I had a contact with a McAfee tech dept., for them it was also not easy,
1,5 hour of troubleshoot didn't help, but next time, some hours later, in a 2nd session they solved it.
I am sorry that I couldn't follow (I had an appoitment and I had to leave), but when I came back McAfee technician left a message that the problem was solved.

Apologies if my comment seemed to have doubted your guidance. My intention was to add further 'food for thought' to the problem. I just wanted to highlight that two identical HP laptops, same Windows 7 version, same McAfee versions were behaving differently with regard to this issue.

As i mentioned, I will follow your guidanance and uninstall McAfee from my laptop and report back on the result.

I switched off "Real-time Scanning" on McAfee and as alexnlp advised, the problem was solved. Switch on "Real-time Scanning" and the photo's attibutes become hidden each time a photo is rotated or a Tag added.
