[solved] Can W7 handle large #s of files?

I did some data recovery and pulled over 8 million "files" from an external HD.

Searching 'mp3' and 'doc' I verified there are many valid files on my internal drive.

However, when I try to copy them back the window disappears after about 5 minutes of "preparing to copy" and there is nothing on the drive when I look.

It feels like my system is getting bogged down because of the absurd # of files! I can't even right click -> properties to see exactly how many are on there. It starts going really slow and I get impatient after about 8 million.

Welcome windows especially 64 bit can handle huge amounts file/folder/ the slowdown may be either it is using up your memory or maybe the hard drive cant keep up. You could either use Acronis or ghost to back them up to one space. Or failing that try doing it in small chunks.;

Let us know if you need more help

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
I found a folder with a ton of files and they are all tiny .vob files so seem to be useless.

First time i tried to delete it got over 250,000 before saying 'too large for recycle bin - delete?' I said yes but its still on there.

2nd attempt at deleting it stuck at 111,501 items and just sitting there with HD light on but no visual progress for at least 15 minutes now.

I'll check those programs out i guess.

deleting large numbers of files

First thing you could try is to set the recyler size to 0 on that drive. they will be deleting them permanently. then when those files are gone set it back to its before size.

Hope that helps but if it doesnt pm me

OK the sync program from Grig's files is running now.

Assuming this works, what application should I tell my friend to view/access them with?

I'm worried that picking through all this junk will be nightmarish for him to get the files he needs. He is likely using XP or Vista.

holding Shift + Delete will accomplish the same thing.

joe7dust what data recovery software did you use to recover the files? It is possible that many of them are corrupt.

Why not give me some more info. Is this a corrupt disc, a disc with too much stuff on it. What happened before, whats happening now, where do you want to be>

He backed up his data to an external HD, then accidentally deleted it. (he doesn't know how many GB but said it was 50,000 files and from what R-Studio says its at least 30GB)

The biggest mistake was then copying some more files over to the external. I think some of the deleted ones got overwritten. (about 20GB was copyed onto the external again)

Since this was a brand new drive I told him it would be a cleaner recovery from it rather than his internal that was reformatted and reinstalled OS onto.

*edit* That syncing program has run for 1.5 hours and scanned 2.5 million files so far @ 8GB worth. If it takes 6-8 hours total to prep for the sync, how long do you think the actually copy process will take?

2.5 hours @ 24GB now should be almost done, don't expect more than 40GB

Nope it mysteriously disappeared again. I went out and came home and nothing has been copied, the Grig's program wasn't running anymore and there was a C++ error window that was completely black inside. I'm not even sure if that was related to the sync or not.

Guess it's time to try the shift+delete tip...

"preparing to delete" for 8 minutes then vanished, files are still there.

HD light still going nuts but nothing apparently happening.

At this point I'm thinking the best method may just be doing a search for all mp3, all mp4, all .doc, .xls, etc. as much as he can recall and then copying only those extentions... you guys agree?

Is there another data recovery software you guys can recommend? I have NEVER had this R-Studio recover anything.

Turns out when I thought I had searched and found some recovered files, those were just ones that were already on his drive. Unless R-Studio makes a folder called RGLLC in the directory ABOVE the one you tell it to.

There are tons of data recovery app. What we really need to know to more information about what state the drive is in (you could snip a picture of the drives directory) what files are seen. Where do want to recover them to, are the files intact or just fragments. Do you have a backup of the drive, etc.

It also would be helpful if you filoled in the "my system specs" in your control panel

Waiting on info

one option is to use Command Prompt to xcopy the files without Windows 'Preparing to copy...'
Code:
g:
cd\
xcopy *.mp3 c:\MyMusic\ /s
G: is just an example. This will copy all .MP3 files, including all those from within subdirectories into new subdirectories in c:\MyMusic

Hope this helps :)
   Information
You can do the same for any other file type. Just different folder names, it's then easier to browse the new folders on C:

   Note
You may need to open an 'Elevated Command Prompt', just right-click & select 'Run as Administrator'

I started the entire process over.

Turns out I may have gotten a virus on my internal HD from my friends USB drive I was trying to recover data from. Ever since I recovered some (useless) data the HD light has been going nuts even after a reboot so I reformatted and reinstalled.

I also decided to run the recovery from an OS that is a little more stable (not w7). 'Recover My Files 2.29' is running from a live XP cd on another computer now. I set it to only recover specific file types so I shouldn't end up with millions of files this time. It has scanned about 0.3% of the drive and found 1100 files in 15 minutes.

Recover My Files, I have never used, but it is probably as good as any. I use a free tool called Recuva and a commercial software Runtime GetDataBack for NTFS.

The ****ty thing about these programs that I am noticing... they slow down as they go. It took 4 hours for the first 10%, but now its 13 hours and only 20%... the number of sectors scanned or w/e is noticeably ticking by slower :(
