Windows 7 Crashing every 20 minutes or so

Won't shut down properly; usually hangs in while shutting down and then BSODs.
When put into Sleep or Hibernate, often fails to shut down fully and then BSODs.
If left running it will BSOD as soon as 20 minutes after restarting.

Original installation of Home Premium x64 on
Acer Aspire 1810T w/ 4 GB memory
originally purchased in Nov 2009.

System is now upgraded to SP1 but crashes were happening before SP1 was installed. SP1 seemed to fix the problem temporarily but it has returned.

The last dump occured when shutting down from safe mode.

Update (2011-03-23):
Attached updated crashinfo with new crashes after removing AVG and SPTD.
Shutdown/startup improved temporarily but issues have returned.

Hi and welcome

There are a couple of problems

1-sptd.sys used in daemon tools and alcohol is a huge cause of BSOD's

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp,sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads

when you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place.


2-AVG Also known to cause BSOD's. Remove and replace with Microsoft security essentials and the win 7 firewall

AVG - Download tools

3- Zone Alarm. Also a cuase. remove and use the win 7 firewall.


4-partmgr.sys Part of the OS and was the cause of at least one of the BSOD's. I would run a system file check to verify and repair the OS files.

Run a system file check to verify and repair your system files.
To do this type cmd in search, then right click to run as administrator, then
SFC /SCANNOW

Thanks for the suggestions and the rapid turnaround. I have uninstalled 1 and 2. 4. I have run SFC and it says "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

For 3, I can't find any mention of ZoneAlarm on my system. Is there a particular DLL that makes you think it is on my system? How else can I remove it if it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs?

Update:

Shutdown/startup improved temporarily but after running clean overnight, I had a spontaneous restart this morning and the shutdown hangup and long slow startup (black screen for 10-15 minutes) issues have returned.

I have attached an updated crashinfo to the original message in the thread.

Seems to be behaving itself for the last 24 hours after that one crash the day before yesterday. Not sure I'm ready to call it solved yet as that will be sure to bring it back!

p.s. I never did find any trace of ZoneAlarm on my system. I definitely hadn't installed it myself and have never seen it pop up.
