WMP12 wont playback HD .mov files.

Ive had this working perfectly until two nights ago.
Under W7 HP 64 bit im trying to play back my HD .mov files and while WMP12 will play them without reporting any errors, the screen is a mess. Lots of colour bars, squares etc. Even the control bar is covered in this visual mess.
The files themselves are fine and will play perfectly in VLC, MPC and in fact any other media player i have installed.

Ive un installed WMP and re installed it but that didnt help.

I have a feeling its not the player but the ATI drivers or Catalyst control centre software, like its the way its overlaying the video but this was all working fine before so im at a loss.

Its not the end of the world so please, no re format and re install the OS suggestions.

As it only started happening two nights ago, try performing a system restore to three days ago (Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Restore) and see if that solves the problem or not.

Did you install some program(s) 2 days ago that could have thrown a monkey wrench into WMP? And hopefully you did not install any Codecs - they can mess things up pretty much.

I should have mentioned i had already done a 3 day back restore but that didn't help.
It looks like my hunch was correct about the ATI software. Ive just taken that off and WMP is working fine again.
Im not sure why i installed it in the first place but i do know it was working fine after i did.

Ill leave it off for now.

Me again. Ive just updated to the latest Windows 7 ATI drivers thorough windows update and im getting the same problem. It only effect WMP12 and .mov files.
I can take the new drivers off but this is a bit of a pain.

I guess im stuck with the old drivers.

Try this: rename the extensions of files from .mov to .hdmov and see if the picture improves. If it doesn't work at all, you should have to remux them into the .hdmov container (should you need help, I could walk you through it).
.hdmov uses DirectShow, which should result in better quality.

I tried changing the file extension but it made no difference.
Seeing as VLC and MP classic both play these files fine, as did WMP12 before the driver update, i dont think ill bother remuxing the files and just revert back (again) to the older driver.

Your right, i should but im one of these people that although i dont need it to work, it bugs me if it doesn't.
A driver update shouldn't break something like this and it bugs me that it does.

The files will play but there is a lot of disturbance and flashing colours going on.

I fully understand and agree with you but I have arrived at that later stage in life where I often think time is too short to worry about things that don't matter too much!

Yeah, im not going to worry too much. I was hoping there would be an easy fix but if i have to stay on a certain version of the dirver just to keep it working then so be it.
