Cannot Save a Play List in Media Player 12

When I create a playlist in WMP 12 and try to save it I get the following Message:

"Windows Media Player encountered a problem while creating or saving the playlist"

I have tried disabling the WMP feature, rebooting and enabling the feature but the problem still exists.

Would someone please help me correct this problem?

(My profile doesn't show it but I am using SP1)

I really can't say. I don't recall ever trying to create a playlist before. It is a good question. Good enough to restore a True Image pre-SP1 backup to find the answer. That is, when I get the time -- maybe later on this afternoon.

I just determined the problem occurred during pre-Sp1 days.

Problem Solved!

Apparently, according to folks over in Microsoft Answers, WMP wants to save playlists in the folder set up for ripping music. I had no such folder setup so set one up under 'MyUsername'\Music. Now I can create and save playlist to my heart's content.

Hope this helps someone who runs across the same problem.

To save the list, click Save list at the top of the list pane, type a name for the playlist, and then press Enter.


By default, playlists are saved with a .wpl extension in the Playlists folder, which is located in the default save folder of your Music library. You can also save playlists with the .m3u or .asx extension (Normal playlist you want!). To do so, at the top of the list pane, click the List options button, click Save list as, and then change the extension in the Save as type dialog box. After you save the playlist, it's added to the Playlists category in the navigation pane.

To play the playlist in the list pane, click the Play button.

It works for me.

I am having the same issue with playlists. The fix does not work for me. WMP will not let me set up or change the rip settings either...

Sorry for waking up an old thread. I stumbled across this one a couple of weeks ago when I had the same problem – couldn’t rip or save playlists. In the end I figured it was a directory problem and WMP was trying to save to a G drive. So last night I plugged in a couple of memory sticks so that I had a G drive, opened WMP and I could then change the rip folder and other settings. Voila! Problem solved

Seems WMP got confused over drives :sarc:

So, thought I’d pop back and let you know what I found and maybe it will help someone. Whoop!

I had this problem too. i am using win7 x64, playlists won't save. the fix that says go to the microsoft media player folder and delete all files so media player can rebuild the database gives an error that says file in use in another service. i looked and cannot even see another related service to end it. the only solution is instead of using the save, use "save as" feature. this is a really stupid problem, no wonder people complain about media player and use winamp or something else.

I was able to fix this by going into WMP/Organise/Options/Rip music tab

Then selecting "change" on "Rip music to this location" and selecting the default music folder.
