Convert a video ISO to MKV

I am looking for a free program to do what "MakeMKV" will do.
convert a video iso file (containing vobs) eg. file1.iso to file2.mkv
I'm looking for a 1:1 type conversion not a transcoding.

This is all a bit foreign to me and would appreciate some help from those who are in to this.

PS: MakeMKV seems really expensive for what it is.

Can you be a bit more specific about the format of the .iso
Is this a backup of a video dvd?
Does it contain .vob files?
or some other format.
There is likely a freeware solution for this, but more specific format information on the source would help.

I'm trying to store my (paid) DVD collection on a hard drive for backup and so I can access them from the WD TV Live media centre.
I can decrypt them as as ISOs which contains the video_ts folder with the VObs.
The WD media centre has a bug with audio down mixing.
If I convert the ISOs to MKVs (takes a few minutes with MakeMKV) WD handles the audio fine.

I have used Handbrake to transcode in the past but I want to retain the original MP2 coding quality.

(I'm on the bottom of the learning curve here)

MakeMKV:

The DVD functionality will remain free forever.

The BD functionality will be free during the current beta stage. Only when the final version emerges and you need the BD functionality, you need to buy it. Not otherwise.

So if it is only DVDs/DVD ISOs, you need not buy MakeMKV since it is free forever.

If you do not want to use MakeMKV for any other reason, then to make your MKVs you may try XMedia Recode ( I use DVDFab to make MkVs. So I haven't tried XMedia)

that wasn't at all clear to me before. The "About" window suggested that the whole application was on trial and tells how many days I have left.
So does it keep running past this date?

I'll also have a look at Xmedia Recode.
Also, when I start with BDs I'll buy AnyDVD or DVDFab.

I think you have to periodically get a new key to keep it going. Please read through their forum and you will get all the details. Keep track as to when you have to get a new key. Of course the software itself will tell you when the current key expires. ( I tried it free only for a shortwhile before buying it. So I have not been keeping track on this aspect. But definitely it is free forever for DVDs but for this minor irritant.)

For BDs you have to buy AnyDVDHD and not AnyDVD. Just alerting lest you make a mistake.
