You probably just need a driver.
Go to the computer makers website and search for them.
What kind of laptop is it specifically?

try downloading from majorgeeks.com the realtek software "Vista_Win7_R249" - it works for my acer 5920G which was having internal mic problems when I ugraded from Vista OS.

This issue has bee discussed on the DELL Forums and the solution is to load Vista drivers for the microphone. See this discussion

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19300261.aspx

Go to the DELL driver and download page for your 1530 and set OS for Vista and you should find what you need, or if your 1530 came with Vista your drivers will be on your Already installed CD

First timer on Forum. I have same problem on Dell XPS 1530 - laptop microphone unusable (picks up faintly because when I record/play back check I can barely hear sound.) Checked volume levels in Control Panel Sound -set to 80%. Video cam fine. Speakers work fine - checked playback with other sound bytes. All sound works fine with USB headset 0 both microphone & speakers. I'm trying to do Webex meetings, can hear others, but they can't hear me unless I enable the headset.
SPECS: Intel 2Duo Core T6400@2GHz; 4G RAM; 32 bit OS; NVIDIA GeForce 8400MGS; Windows 7 Ultimate 2009. Have check for latest updates on drivers. Don't know if it's an issue, but I have Skype installed and it is running as a process in Task Manger on auto start.
At my wits end. Hardware or software problem?

I couldn't find a the driver :(
Search by your service tag. If there's no driver for Windows 7 for the mic, then try choosing Vista as the OS.

Good advice. I have on occasion used Vista drivers if the 7 drivers were not available. Be sure to use the 32bit for 32bit and x64 for x64 though. Don't mix and match.

Newbee on Forum

The last thing I want to do is alienate or annoy anyone. I'm new to this whole forum thing, don't speak the language very well, and apparently don't know how to play nice. Needing some help. I'm really a nice guy!
Exactly how do I undo the damage, create my own thread, and get on with a solution? :p

Sound Not Working

My error - my bad. I hope this helps someone else.
First, my description was wrong - it was laptop speakers not working that was the problem. I found the fix by Control Panel --> Sound --> Playback tab --> select HD Audio Device (not jacked, HDMI, or USB connected devices). Go through all the Configure & Properties and make sure that the device is enabled and not muted . Running test should then produce results. Mine was muted, and it could have been as simple as having hit the mute button on the laptop touch controls.
Simple thing - I don't know how I missed it; but I did for several months.

The best people can do is, before reinstalling any OS is to back up the drivers with a freeware program like

Free driver backup software, Driver Magician Lite

then, after installing the new OS, go to "device manager", then install any driver you are missing.

I do it all the time, and no problems yet.

help! need driver for mic and speaker hp mini windows 7

i already upgraded my os though. i was running xp, then upgraded to win 7 and then the mic stopped working. the speakers were fine. at 3am last night (this is what i get for staying up too late) i saw that someone suggested to download the drivers off hp's website for the mic for vista. they said it worked for them and they're running win 7. i did and it messed up my speakers (so now they're NOT working).

so not only now does my mic not work but now it somehow uninstalled the drivers for my speakers as well. i tried to do a system restore but for some reason it wouldn't let me go back a couple hours to restore it.

after getting a response from this forum, i tried to download the driver magician lite but then realized that it's for before you upgrade your os.

so if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. the driver magician lite seems pretty effective for pre-os upgrade though so thanks for that info. <3

Finding drivers can be a pain :( the only thing I can suggest is go to your PC Makers website and search for the driver.

One thing though, check if you still have a windows.old folder in your C: drive. What I sometimes did was searched for my missing drivers there. You can also look what kind of software you previously had installed i.e. Realtek etc
