Renew IP Address

Hi all,

I am new here, so excuse any lack of courtesies I may show. I have an Acer Aspire 5534 with an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor L310 1.20 GHz laptop. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.

My problem is that I can connect online, but cannot connect to certain online games that require the detection of my IP address. I have tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, but I get an error message saying the media is disconnected. This occurs when I am connected both wired and wireless. The weird thing is that I have a perfect internet connection.

So, basically, how can I renew my IP address? I have Comcast internet and a Belkin Router, all which seem to be working fine.

Your ISP provide you your IP. You are either statically assigned (the ip always the same) or dynamically where you get a different ip when ever you reboot.

I am pretty certain that I have a dynamic IP address. I went to Belkin's router set-up page (192.186.2.1) and I seem to be configured as dynamic. It was always assigned this way.

There may not be much you can do. Config and release may not change anything, depending on the policy of your ISP. My IP changes every 3 or 4 months and any interim changes I try to make with config and release have no effect. Confirm whether or not your IP changes from boot to boot or week to week or month to month.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. It's probably talking about your Internal IP.

I'm sure you already know this, but here is a quick lesson on IP's and NAT.


Your computer has 2 IP addresses, an external one, and an internal one. Think of your router as a telephone switchboard, or a receptionist, it handles incoming "calls" and directs them to the right person (or computer)

Your external IP is the one that everyone outside your network (IE on the internet) see's, and connects to your router. Think of it like a telephone number, everybody "dials" your IP address to connect to you.

By contrast, your internal IP, (the 192.168.whatever.whatever) is purely for use on your network. Think of it like a telephone extension. Your router hands out IP addresses using something called DCHP, which is what the dynamic most likely stands for on your router setup. Your router recieves the incoming data, and then redirects it to the right internal "extension" this is how many people can share the same Internet connection even though you all have one external IP.

Ip release/renew is absolutely pointless if you are behind a router, because all it does is refresh your computers INTERNAL IP, to the outside world this makes not one jot of difference, because the external IP remains the same.

If you have a dynamic external IP (and most home ISP's do) then the only way to refresh the external IP is to reboot the router/modem. The quickest and easiest way to do this is look at the status page of your router, if you see the EXTERNAL IP change between reboots (I.E one that doesn't read 192.168.1.x) then you have dynamic, otherwise you are SOL I'm afraid.

I suppose it looks like gibberish no matter whether I post is as a quick or normal reply... anyhow, anyone can see how I am configured as dynamic. Any thoughts on how I can get rid of the "media disconnected" problem? Thanks so much for everyone's help and knowledge by the way. I appreciate it.

"Media Disconnected" in your case, I suspect means that the router is rejecting it, because as I said above, does not one jot of good.

You were correct, and I was wrong, the Dynamic you were talking about is your WAN IP, (Ie external) Try rebooting the router, see if your WAN IP changes.

Just a word of warning, might want to delete the WAN IP from your posts....
