Solved Reinstall of W7 onto a _invalid_ W7

Hi,

I have a STOP: 0x0000007B BSOD, Windows cant boot up.
And it seems I cant solve it (tried W7's startup repair tool - unable to repair, tried System Restore - unable too, run into an error... ??? -, tried Fsecure boot scan CD not found any virus in the bootsector, tried fixmbr/boot commands, but nothing, still BSOD while boot up).
So it seems I have to reinstall W7.
My question is:
Is it possible to reinstall it onto the old one without any loss on the hdd? I mean the ProgramFiles, MyDocuments etc folder(s)?
I remember I have installed once time Vista again over an already Vista installation, and when it was done, everything was right, every program were there etc., such like nothing happened. But I don't know what was selected during the install; upgrade or new...

Copy out your files first: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console - Windows 7 Forums.

Programs must be reinstalled if you can't repair Win7.

See if you can boot into Safe Mode to run a full scan of Malwarebytes

Then run the memtest86 CD scan for 5-6 passes or overnight to stress test. Or run the Windows Memory test from System Recovery Options.

Next try Startup Repair again from DVD Repair console, several times if it finds anything to repair. If not, Startup Repair should automate System Restore, but try again run it separately anyway from the Options list.

Thanks guys, good to see that you are try to help me to avoid a reinstall process.
I have ran the Win's memory test (from system recovery console), seems no problems.
Unfortunately it can't boot in Safe mode to try that malwarebytes.

But. Maybe it is perhaps an important info about this crash:
During the morning WinUpdate said that new updates available. Okay, I have checked mostly of them (not all; there were some Microsoft Redistributable xy something or whatever, that I didn't check), and also an earlier update of the Microsoft mouse driver.
Update was went fine, after restart everything was okay.
Then, Security Essentials warned about a critical "something", and I choose to solve it, then it was said to restart the system to finish the cleaning.
I have choosen restart.
And pufff.
Bootup started and after a while, BSOD.

And I stucked.

Because I suspected maybe it was a bootsector virus, that's why I started an Fsecure bootcd scan. "Unfortunately" it didn't find viruses in the bootsector.

Can you remember anything about the critical issue MSE flagged?

Are you able to see your files from DVD or rescue CD?

If you must reinstall I would wipe the HD first to clear the bootsector and any underlying infection: Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Aaah, unfortunately not. I wish, but I can't recall it from my brain, I just see that name for a moment, you know... :S
Okay, I will try AVG rescue CD (thanks your suggestions, this kind of thing I just searched for; to copy my stuffs).

If there was a virus a complete wipe of the entire Hard Disk Drive would be the best way to get to a clean install, there's a lot of useful information presented below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.


After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, then boot the Windows 7 installation media to use Step One of this tutorial at the first link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.

• Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
• If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.

Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

If you don't want to wipe the entire HDD, you can do a partition-specific wipe of the Windows partition using the Partition Wizard Bootable Disk (PWBD) have a look at Option Three in the tutorial at this link below.

Yeah, thanks, I saw that, I checked that but it wasn't clear how to... But after you post it again, I was enlightened... Just use that "Open" window as a FileBrowser and use Copy-Paste commands... :banghead:

Meanwhile, I was over a reinstall... but also coz the system fast as lightspeed...
