Would like a show of virtual hands,

I use Microsoft security essentials on my Win 7 PC I have been using it like this for about 9 months apart from taking the usual precautions like Firefox with add-ons (WOT & ABP)

1) Do I need a program like malwarebytes aswell and what are people’s preferences?

2) I don’t want this program to start at start up, just would like a light weight program to scan monthly say

Hi Westie,

Yes. It's prudent to have a second layer of security to cover any "holes" that might exist in one product only.

Malwarebytes has a good reputation, is highly recommended here, and is well known for interacting with MSE exceptionally well - I use both as resident programs and have never had a conflict.

If you opt for the FREE version of Malwarebytes, then you can achieve your monthly scan requirement, but....you will need to update the database manually and run the scan manually.

If you opt for the paid version of Malwarebytes ($20-odd for a lifetime licence) then you can install it as resident (it has a very low overhead in terms of RAM requirements in my view), you can opt to have the database update hourly (its a very quick update), and it also includes a very useful malicious IP blocker.

Whichever version you choose, adding Malwarebytes is definately, in my opinion, the best solution.

Post back here if you need more details.

Regards,
Golden

Hi Westie,

I have yet to hear of the two conflicting with one another, and it certainly hasn't happened in my case. You might want to also look at the Malwarebye forums accesible from their support link to see what others say about any conflicts.

Malwarebytes has an exclusion list where you can tell it to ignore files and processes associated with MSE, and vice versa, and this guarantees they will not conflict. Here is any example.

Post back if you have more questions.

Golden

I also run MSE and Malwarebytes (paid version) and haven't noticed any conflict problems.

I think that they are a good combination and, indeed, complement each other.

1) Yes. A multi-layered protection is always recommended.

2) No worries, the free version of mbam does not offer real time protection.

:)

Yes ... download and run Mbam (free). It's always good to have a second Anti-malware scanner on hand. You can update and run Mbam when you want to. It is NOT an anti-virus program, so it will not interfere with MSE.

Type services.msc in the start search box, click on the icon ... scroll down to MBam service, right click on it, choose Properties, then set it to manual in the drop down box, so it won't start at start up.

Same here. Been using both for quite a while, and both work just fine.

I concur with the general opinion here. I have MSE running on my Win 7 desktop alongside Malwarebytes Anti Malware and it runs like a dream. MBAM also works well with Avast which I'm running on this machine
