What contributes to the Physics score???! I have a 570 and mine is quite low compared to others I see here!

It's CPU physics, I think, so isn't based on your GPU.

CPU? I have a good CPU, AMD 1090T. Is that what's bringing it down? :shock:

If your CPU can't handle or process certain features you're score won't registor it. All CPU's have instruction sets they can or can't do depending on who manufactured them - AMD or Intel, or when they were made - new gen/old gen.

If you look at the list of instructions on your CPU you'll see there are some things it can or can't process. Here's an example on my CPU's instruction set using AIDA64 (formally known as Everest). This is on an Intel Core i7-950 Processor



You score is based on those instructions, and the strength of the CPU.

Thanks for the reply, You'll have to forgive me for my ignorance as I'm not as knowledgeable at tech speak as I would like to be. Are you just saying that my chip is old or not as good to get a better score? I was under the impression that it was up there in terms of quality

I'm saying not all chips will have all instruction features in them. Some by design - AMD vs Intel, some by generation - old(er) vs new(er).

You also have to keep in mind the performance built into the chip. I don't know much about AMD but I'm sure your CPU isn't the top chip in the company's lineup.

I have an Intel Core i7-950 and it's 4 chips below the top class i7-990x. If I had that chip, my scores would increase dramatically so.....

The score you have reflects the strength of your chip, it doesn't mean it's a bad chip, it's just saying based on performance this is the score we give.

Realtime physics is a very intensive thing on a CPU.

Sorry, just noticed - I ran the GPU only tests. Time saving measure more than anything.

Here's a 3DMark 11 score I've just got.


Think it's just my processor holding it back while it's at stock speeds. Wanna get some better cooling before doing some overclocking on it. The cooler I have now is only just keeping the temps down at stock speed.

You'd get a bit of a difference, but not a massive one.

Only higher score you'd get with an i7 is the physics score, and the i7 2600k in that one has double the score of your 9650.

You may actually see a difference in terms of raw power, not so much between say an i7 and a dual core processor. Basically 3.5gig is 3.5gig, no matter the processor.

Now, if you look at a PCMark Vantage where both processor and GPU is looked at, there you may see a differences between say an i7 and a dual core processor, even at same speeds.

3DMark Vantage is GPU intensive, whereas PCMark Vantage is both GPU and CPU intensive. Of course PCMark looks at the entire PC.

Odd though, both Vantage and 11 report my RAM as 667MHz when it's really at 933MHz.

I get the same thing (667MHz) and my RAM is running at 1600MHz. It's obviously the way the software is reading the RAM. Why, I don't know.

Doesn't DDR3 speeds work the same as DDR2?

With DDR2 for example, 800mhz was the base speed. Anything faster was considered a OC.
If you have 1066 RAM, it almost always shows as DDR2 800 in in any tests etc, even if running higher.
(Unless of course you look at the "actual" speeds)

Look at mine for example.


Notice how its part number is listed correctly as PC8500 (1066) yet the Max Bandwidth is still considered PC6400 DDR2 800.

It looks that way as CPU-Z still reports ram speeds correctly.

No difference between DDR2/DDR3 in that regard.

I noticed an increase in 3D Mark 11 with these drivers as well. The Unigine results were only 2-3 FPS better.

Have to take those tests with a grain of salt though since both camps tend to work a little extra 'magic' that doesn't always reflect real world improvemnets.

Same here on Unigine.
The end result was just shy of 2 FPS better.

And as you pointed out CPU-Z will only show a Max bandwidth of 667 for DDR3, which is what 3DMark is obviously reading, even though the memory is running higher, in my case 1600MHz.



And yeah, anything higher than 667 for DDR3, and 400 for DDR2 is viewed as oveclocked memory.

It is however interesting that 3DMark outs up the CPU's overclocked speed though.

What you guys are looking at are the Jedec specs which are implanted into every kits SPD chip. That's only showing you what the timings and voltages are, or would be, for that kit running at those speeds.

This is different than what cpu-z reports for actual RAM speed, which is the next tab over. Here, real speed is reported correctly.

I am not sure how 3D Mark can screw this up? It's not getting the cpu speed incorrect, and it too must bypass the speed the cpu reports. When given the two values of 3.3GHz or 4.5, it chooses correctly.

It actually does detect the CPU speed you're currently running at (overclocked or not), just not the memory.

What I haven't figured out (yet) is why programs like CPU-Z, 3DMark and other programs don't/can't/won't read the "overclocked" speed of your memory.

Cpu-z doesn't have a problem detecting memory speed... as far as I can tell, it's only Futuremark products that can't see beyond 600MHz.
