SP1 forces WinMail re-hack

For those who were using Vista Winmail in win 7 and find it 'broken' following the installation of the SP1 update (likely due to the inclusion of update KB978542), you can easily restore it by copying the Vista Winmail folder (if you still have it) back to the Program files directory.

I would expect the method in the tutorial here to work as well, although I haven't verified it.

Just a heads up :geek:.

Or...you can just move on to something else because sooner or later it will no longer work at all.
I'm just saying.

Point well taken, and considered. I'll likely move on to Thunderbird eventually. I'm OK, however, with delaying the inevitable :).

I don't understand the resistance to Windows Live Mail. Not only does it work very well, but it actually gives you Exchange like functionality for free, to sync e-mail, contacts, and calendars across several computers.

+1 on the Windows Live Mail suggestion. Being able to share calendars is indeed very nice.

Thanks for the suggestions...:geek:. WLM just doesn't suit me at the moment. Fortunately, I can still hang on to WM for the time being, as can others of my primitive preference (I know you're out there...;)).

That's what I mean, and I'm asking out of curiosity, not disagreement. What about WLM doesn't suit you? I can see if a person used one and only one computer, then my biggest reason to use WLM goes somewhat out the window.

No offense taken, Deacon. I use one machine for email and have no need to sync with any of my other machines. That may change in the future, at which time I may try WLM again, but it would have to be much improved from when I previously tried it. Admittedly, that was quite some time back, at which time, what most were calling bugs, MS was calling 'by design'. I also didn't care much for the 'washed out' interface.

I have only been using the 2011 version, and it doesn't have any bugs or quirks. I don't see anything I'd call "washed out". I can't speak for previous versions of WLM, but I did use Windows Mail all through my Vista time, and WLM 2011 never made me miss the older app.

Would this cause the shortcut to just disappear?

Ran SP1 on my gf's machine last week and today her Win Mail took a ripe ol dump and I am having difficulty restoring it.

Ran repair in Add/Remove and it appears to have come back, but will this be temporary?

It shouldn't have caused it to disappear, just 'break'.

SP1 breaks WinMail altogether and can be 'repaired' by following the advice in the 1st post in this thread. It would have broken immediately rather than a week later. Are you sure you are using WinMail (from Vista)?

Ran repair in Add/Remove and it appears to have come back, but will this be temporary?

There is no Add/Remove in Win 7, nor is there a Repair option. Did you remove the SP1 update from Programs and Features?

ok uninstall/change - repair

This is Windows Live (I guess I mistaken winmail for it - but there was an mui file that said Winmail.exe.mui in Windows Live Mail - I think, her machine isn't available to check.

Really weird, I thought the shortcut just dropped out of her Nexus Dock (sometimes this happens) - but there were no other shortcuts to be found on the machine.

Regardless it is now back to operating. But Win Live Mail was completely missing from the Win Live menu before I ran the repair.

I would reinstall SP1 and then reinstall WLM using the latest version available. SP1 contains security fixes and updates and should not be skipped. Also, some future updates will require that SP1 be installed. Don't forget to backup important files. :)
