W7 64 Updating keeps saying I need to install the self-same update that I've already done several times; this one:

Security Update for Microsoft.NET framework4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB2446708) 23.3MB

I've cleared my browsing history (cookies, etc)

Anyone know how to stop this fault?

Download the standalone .net 4.0 installer;

Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer)

Install it. It has extended capabilities compared to the "standard" Windows installation.

Run an update immediately after installing.

W7 still says I require an update

Alas, after doing all that, I still have the same problem: my Start button still claims I need to do an update of the KB2446708.

I thought that maybe I ought to be uninstalling the earlier Mcrosoft.NET Framework 4 Client Profile and leave the newly installed Micrsoft.NET Framework 4 Extended. But this cannot be done without uninstalling the later one.

So has anyone any further advice as to how to resolve this issue please?

I am running Windows Vista and I am having the exact problem. Every time I start the computer, windows update informs me that an update is needed (Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (KB2446708)). I install the update and it says it is successful but when I restart the computer it informs me it is needed again. Please let me know if you ever figured out how to make it work. Thanks

I had the same problem and have found a way to fix it. First download dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip from here dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip - Windows Live Then run the program and remove .net framework 4. After the required reboot then install .NET Famework 4 from the link Mike Connor provided. The update should now install without issue!

Thanks to everyone here. I've been having this problem with my Windows 7 Home Premium 32 since April 15. Using the 32 bit versions referred to in the links above, and the instructions in this forum page, the problem seems to have been licked. It's been about 24 hours now without a recurrence of the prob.
I'll bookmark this forum right now!!

Yesterday I also downloaded what Mike advised, the standaloan 4.0 and checked for updates. It removed all the old Network programs. Now I have the same two that the OP has and everything works fine. Now why didn't it work for you. Just a couple of thoughts. Are you sure all other programs are shut down and that you are not doing anything on your computer when downloading and installing? Do you have your restore point turned ON? I have read some where that when the update tries to create a restore point and can't it could get discombobulated. You should not have to use a 3rd party program to do this. And lastly. Start and type cmd, use admin. Type in
sfc /scannow to make sure all is well there. (system file checker) When I was done the updated removed N/F 1.0, 2.0, 3.5 and left Client Profile. If Windows want Client Profile left there so be it.

Bear, if your note was to me (I assumed it was since I received the email saying it was in reply to my note), I think that somehow you misinterpreted my note of thanks. In it I said, " . . . the problem seems to have been licked. It's been about 24 hours now without a recurrence of the prob." I'm grateful to have found the forum and even more so to have been able to take advantage of the expertise freely given here.

The link Mike provided wouldn't work for me either without first using the removal tool I recommended. I tried installing it the way you describe it(no programs running during instal/having a restore point created) but it still gave me an error. The Client Profile is where the error was coming from and until that was removed by the 3rd party program(because trying to uninstall the Client Profile from the control panel gave me an error also) I couldn't get anywhere with solving the problem.

I had the problem originally where it wouldn't update and kept failing. I took the update off using the clean up tool and then re installed using Mike's version. The update finally worked and the history says it was successful. However, I now have the update still telling me to do it every night? Does anyone know how to stop it? I have hidden it but really I wonder if this is ok? Isn't updating it once successfully good enough?
I was so grateful for the help about actually getting it to work, so many thanks all for that! I just need to stop the constant update bit now? Please help if you can!

If the cleanup tool fails too (Win 7 Ent x86), there is another solution.

Little drastic, but it's good for your system to do once in a while anyway.

I fixed the problem (finally) by doing a repair upgrade - I did have to download a warez version for this to do it - my original install cd is SP0 and a repair upgrade will not work when you are already on SP1. GOOD distro to use is by "BIE". Use Bit Che + utorrent if you need it... With poweriso, you don't even have to burn the dvd to fix your pc ;)

Peace!
