No sound with onboard audio

Using Windows 7 64 bit. Have ASUS M4A79XTD board with onboard audio. Everything has been running great. There were no changes or upgrades done yesterday. There was a power failure at my house for a second and when it booted up it asked do you want to start up as usual or in safe mode etc. Ever since I get no sound. I see the audio waves in media player. Also the sound controls show meters moving up and down. I got the latest VIA audio driver. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Do you have the default set to "Speakers"

Yes I have the speakers set as default.

Power failures can cause severe problems with various things. It may have killed your speaker amplifiers.

Check to make sure that you have the volume turned up, and not "Muted".

The only thing I can think of, based upon what you mentioned, is that there may be something wrong with the levels.

To check, go to the volume mixer > Playback devices > Speakers > Properties > Levels > Front.
Make sure that the front level is at 100.

Yes, ASUS uses VIA, instead of Realtek on your particular board, so the setup is different. Check for additional settings on your VIA control panel, if you have the VIA driver installed. There may be a front volume setting on the control panel that may be lowered or muted. If not, try re-installing the driver from here. VIA Drivers Download - VIA Technologies, Inc.

Hi Mallen and welcome back to the Forum. Sometimes a momentary power fluctuation can cause unexpected changes to Bios setting. Yes I have seen it more that once. On the outside chance, go into your Bios at startup - go to Advanced tab, then the On Board Device Congiguration tab, then Hd Audio Controller and make sure it is set to ENABLED.
Just a shot - give it a try.

I checked the BIOS and onboard audio was enabled. I disabled and then renabled it to see if that would help. Below that was a setting I was not sure about.

Eup Ready- Allows BIOS to switch off some power at S5 state to get system ready for the Eup requirment. When set to ENABLED, power for WOL, WO_USB and audio will be switched at S5 state.

Not sure what S5 state is????

Also since the power got interrupted, maybe its "stuck" in some in between mode?

I would deinstall all of them and reinstall. Multiple driver instances is always a bad idea.

I removed all the drivers including the NDIDIA ones. Not sure how those even got there since I got a new board. Reinstalled new drivers. Still no sound but meters are showing music and sounds playing. Checked speakers with my MP3 player and they work.

Ok I solved it. Not sure what I did exactly. Can't say which one of these fixed it but here is the order. I unplugged the speakers. Rebooted. The rebooted in safe mode. Then rebooted. Went to device manager and removed under system devices: 2 high definition controllers. Under sound 4 high definition audio devices and 1 VIA high definition audio. Rebooted. Then windows installed some drivers automatically. Downloaded and installed the latest VIA HD audio codec driver v8.3.00.31.100524 Then booted up the BIOS. There was a setting for front panel audio type. The choices were HD or AC97. I changed it to AC97. Rebooted and the sound was back.
