Solved Windows 7 Re-installation problems

Try as Greg suggested and use just the clean command, it only takes seconds and removes all format configuration data, then use the step #7 from the clean install tutorial to create a single 100GB partition to do the install to, don't be concerned if you get a message that 'other' partitions may be created.


DISKPART : At PC Startup

I have cleaned the HD using diskpart again, and I have clicked on Custom install. There is one spot to install Windows to: "Disk 0 Unallocated Space." Total Size: 298.1 GB, Free Space: 298.1 GB. The message at the bottom reads: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk." Details for this are as follows: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu. Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The disk may fail soon. If other hard disks are available, install Windows to another location." The option to format, delete and extend are grayed out. Only the "New" option is clickable, which I assume creates a new partition. I have the option to click next, and when I do, a message at the bottom reads "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information." Any more ideas?

I haven't really kept up with this thread, have you run the HDD makers utilities?


Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities

You want to run the HD maker's diagnostics and repair extended CD scan .

If it will repair enough to create a partition using Diskpart in Step 2.2 of this tutorial SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation , then make a partition for the whole HD and run Disk Check on it from the Win7 DVD Repair console Command Line: Disk Check

The combo of these two tests will determine with certainty if your HD is reparable or must be replaced.

I'm using the Hitachi HD Diagnostic Disc, but I don't see an option for my hard drive type... I think my hard drive is a Toshiba brand. Does it matter which option I pick when it asks for the brand of the controller?

I don't think Toshiba have produced an HD diagnostic disc so I think you'll be OK just to run with the Hitachi disc.

Right, I'm using that, and now I'm at a screen with four options:
1. for Adaptec
2. for LSI 320 Controller
3. for Tekram & Symbios Controllers
4. for ATT0 320 Controller
I'm using a Toshiba Hard Drive, and I think I have a SATA controller, so which option should I pick?

Not sure, quite honestly.

I'm hoping whichever option you choose will throw up an error if it's not the correct one.

Wouldn't it be easier to bite the bullet and buy a new hard drive?

I'm shutting down now as it's getting late over here and way past my bedtime.

Try Adaptec, then if it won't scan try the others..

Alright guys, thanks for all your help. I brought the computer back to Future Shop today and they're going to replace the hard drive, free of charge, so I can wipe my hands of all this bull. Thanks again.
