Solved Clean install (or upgrade) from 32bit W7 to 64bit W7?

Hi,
First of all, I realise that I will lose all of my documents, programs etc. My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. I would like to get 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate. My computer IS x64 capable. Any help/ideas? Also, will I have to buy a new Windows 7 or is it all included?

Hello Jaidyn,

If you have a retail copy of Windows 7, then it comes with two separate installation discs. One for 32-bit Windows 7, and the other 64-bit Windows 7. You will be able to use the same product key to activate either one.

What type of Windows 7 is it? (ex: OEM, student, retail, etc....)

You could borrow a friends 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate installation disc of the same type to use to install it on your computer, and use your product key to activate it.

Hmmm..... I'm not sure, how can I check? And I only know of one other person that has Windows 7 and I'm pretty sure he downloaded illegally.

To add on to this i'd recommend you back up you data on some dvds and if you can back your docs and other files via dropbox or Skydrive by microsoft. Either way you can do an upgrade and still keep your files but i'd recommend to do a fresh install trust me your system will run flawlesly

You're system specs say "custom build" for your system, so I had only assumed that you installed Windows 7 yourself. If so, where did you get your Windows 7 from, and what did you use to install Windows 7?

I bought the computer from some computer shop that puts all of the components together for you so no, I did not build it myself. And the W7 Ultimate CD was bought from an Internet website. I'm pretty sure it was legit because the CD had the original text and colour printed onto it. Though it came in just a plastic DVD case... I'm not sure if I answered your question correctly so tell me if I haven't.

Oh, by the way, does my signature automatically post itself or is there something I have to select?

It sounds like you didn't get the 64-bit disc from them if it was a retail copy that you bought.

Check your PM box.
