Hello Reverence, welcome to Se7en Forums!

It's probably as Airbot says; but it may have alot to do with how much RAM you have installed; 64-bit does its best with at least 8GB of RAM.

Hmmm - I'll have some definitive answers in a while here, but although I am seeing 64bit slower in things like reboot time it is a lot faster in others (well, really cause I can now use Thunderbird 3 b2 pre 64bit and get my email a boatload faster!)

I have also decided to make this my dev OS - All the VS crap and the F# CTP and other crap are getting installed on this machine permanently now - I think.

I may wait one more iteration, since I am trying to build the mini-z3r010 machine....

Decisions, decisions.....

Yeah I've had no problems with x64 on my system. I used x86 for 6985 (I think that was the build I used) and it ran fine too but x64 is definitely faster.

My experience is the same as the OP. x86 felt faster than x64. I was ready to switch to x64 since I have an extra gig to throw in my box, and x64 would read it where board limitations limit me to 3GB on x86. But x86 just felt a bit faster.

Also the lack of vsfilter.dll for x64 also factored in (I know 64 bit ffdshow does subs, but I prefer DirectVobSub over ffdshow).

x86 Vs x64

Ok having run various benchamarks graphically decoding visual timed and cpu intensive/hard drive responce time tests for last 2 weeks i found the following results

on a machine running under 6gb ram stick to x86 although physically the system appeared more responsive the actual time of completion of tasks was equal and in most cases slower than x64bit version however to the best of my ability to test this it is simply a trick of the mind,graphically x86 has less delay in appearing to react to user input(even though task(s) being performed is infact slower)

i run 2 machines the lesser has 8gb the better 16gb now obviously more ram is an unfair advantage but simply put if u give x64 the resources it craves(lots of ram and high clock cpu) it will leave x86 for dust.....

Which should I choose ?

Hello guys.
I've been using Vista in my laptop for almost two years now and it's never slow, but it ain't that fast either, it just runs quite well. I'm going to buy the upgrade to Windows 7 and I'm not sure about the version I choose.
These are some of its characteristics:
- Core2 Duo T7500 2.2Ghz, 4MB Cache;
- 2GB DDR2 RAM;
- GeForce G8400M GS;
- 250 GB HD;

What do you experts suggest ? :D

Thanks bros

Hi Almeida,

You can install the 64 bit version as your processor supports it. You will benefit in the future from installing 64 bit if you ever decide to upgrade your RAM. I've installed 64 bit on several laptops like yours and have had no problems with it. Drivers shouldn't be a problem either, most of them can be downloaded via Windows Update.

Yeah it is because that is not enough RAM for x64 to yield faster results. You should use the 32bit.
Why, so the OP won't get to use all of their memory? Windows 7 x64 won't seem any different in basic usage than Windows 7 x86, and it shouldn't. The x64 should show it's advantage under a load, or with the right apps, like Photoshop, etc.

Let's stick to the facts here as well. You definitely don't need 8 GB to show a difference either. If a system has 2 GB of memory or less, it gets x86 for me. If it has 3 GB or more, it gets x64.
