Win 7 is so damn slow when transfering files

when trying to backup my data to my external drives which are connected with esata, the speeds it copys is so damn slow, it's common to have data transfer speeds of 1.71 per MB to top speed of 23.7 per MB. I know this is crazy slow, what could be causing this ??

Are you copying the files from your :C drive? If so, how often do you defrag?
Windows has a built in program to help you do this in the start up menu, under accessories and system tools.

Yes I know how to defrag and that is not the problem, not from C drive.

I'm copying drive other drives to a external drive

You could also try the free Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 for your backups:

SyncToy 2.1 is a free application that synchronizes files and folders between locations. Typical uses include sharing files, such as photos, with other computers and creating backup copies of files and folders.

It's extremely easy to use interface allows you can create multiple sets of folder pairs, specifying the source and destination for each, with options to either Synchronize, Echo or Contribute, of which Contribute is most often used for backups. You can also run either individual pairs, or multiple specific pairs at once.

The advantage of using a tool such Synctoy, is that when you need to perform a backup, you will only copy those files that have been modified or added.

If you don't like SyncToy, then you can also try Allway Sync. It's not as friendly to use as SyncToy because it's interface is cluttered with alot of useless information. Also, the free version limits you to backing up a set number of file per month, unless you purchase a license.

synctoy doesn't work like other backup software because of the goofy permissions in Win7 Wish I never upgraded

To answer your question, no, the transfer speed shouldn't be that slow using e-sata.

Have you looked into updating you motherboard's drivers? - Mainly the chipset drivers?

Checked cables?

I checked your specs.... have you updated to SP1 ? They resolved some issues with copying (from other posts I've read on here about the same subject).

didn't know there was a SP1 for Win7 I have my updates on auto but don't know if I have SP1

Not to be rude, but I don't agree with this. You can believe it if you want and just not solve your problem. Or you can realize that many of us, who use eSATA drives don't get these type of copy speeds. I use Windows explorer, I use a 2TB Samsung 5400 SpinPoint drive, I use a thermaltake blacX enclosure via eSATA and get close to 90MB a minute when I copy large files like ISO's, etc. And I use Windows 7.

Same for me. Whether it's USB, eSATA, Gigabit ethernet - all transfer very fast and usually use the whole bandwidth available.

Remember that lots of tiny files will take a lot longer than one large file. Also the transfer speed is very approximate...

How does your eSATA drive connect? Is it an external hard drive, does it connect to an eSATA port on your case, or via a i/o plate installed in the back near where your video card plugs in?

I have 3 500 GB drives internal connected by esata and I ahve a external with 2 1 TB drives connected with edata on the bqack panel of my MB

All drives are partitioned into smaller drives

I transfer files from my PC all the time to an external hard drive using e-sata and average about 80-90MBs myself. Someting is going on with you system to get the slow speeds you're getting.

If you want to take the attitude "Windows 7 sucks when it comes to transferring files" well....

Yes I know I have a problem and so don't many other people, just Google Slow transfer rates.

I'm glad you guys have no problems but I do and I ahve tried everything all of you suggested before with no help.

So not to be rude but you telling me yours run fine isn't helping me I already know I have a problem.
