When I try a custom install of windows 7 from the DVD I get the same blue screen and error code. I am doing that at the startup I select boot from CD Rom, get the screen that says "loading files" and then the next screen shows up for about 3-5 seconds and then I get the error blue screen and everything freezes. I get the same error everytime It's a long string of number mostly zeroes.

I have this setup

Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 ATX GeForce 6100 Motherboard
AMD 3200 2.2 Ghz 64 bit
Asus EIDE DVDRW
WD 1 TB external
3.5GB Ram
Zotac Geforce PCIE Video
SB Live Audigy 2 Soundcard
Currently running XP Corporate 32 Bit

I have tried removing RAM to get under 2 GB, same error. Tried removing the External HD, same error.

Anyone got any more ideas?

Thanks

Tim

I have read the questions thread, and spent hours looking at other similar problems but havnt seen any solutions.

I do have onboard video which is a NVidia GeForce 128mb shared.

How are you doing the install? There is no upgrade path from XP to Win 7 so you need to do a clean install.

Also, try removing the Zotac Geforce PCIE Video and using the onboard video until you get installed, then install the Zotac driver, power down, install the Zotac card and power on again. See if that gets around the problem.

Also, what does the BSOD tell you?

Where did you get Win7? Did you burn the DVD yourself? Confirm ISO and burn another DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Next try writing ISO to flash stick. You can extract ISO from retail DVD using ImgBurn, then write using this tool with Win7 in showing the drop-down menu: Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3 | USB Pen Drive

Next try wiping the HD using Diskpart from DVD Command Line:
Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command
DISKPART At PC Startup

Next reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS
While in BIOS set SATA controller to AHCI to try install, then IDE if necessary.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

As a last resort, move HD to install Win7 in another machine, then SysPrep HD to move back to problem machine: SysPrep to move HD to another computer

I got win 7 premium through the student discount. I just DL it from the site and used ImgBurn @ 4x with verify.

I dont have a 4G flash stick so I can't try that method. You can see the error message in my previous post.

Ive backed up my data but this is my only computer at the moment so I dont want to take it down except as a last resort. So I am not quite ready to flash the whole drive.

Do you think it would be worth while to flash the CMOS w/o wiping the drive?

Did you create a new blank partition for the win7 install or are you trying to install it to your existing XP partition ?

I was going to install it to the existing XP Partition. With the install crashing so early would that make much of a difference?

That's why ztrucker said you cannot upgrade the XP, you must do a clean install to a blank partition. So do you want to wipe your XP completely or create a Dual boot system of XP & win7 ?

OOOOOH, I got confused the way I see "Clean" & "Custom" being used describing installs. I thought once the install got going it would wipe the HD.

So I was planning on wiping XP off completely, would you advise against that?

It looks like C: & E: is your HD in two partitions. L: looks like your DVD drive is being seen again like a virtual drive. Not sure what N: MultiBOOT is ?

Have you looked at the tutorials section for Clean Install ( & with an UpGrade Disc) ?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

If you have everything saved & backed up off this HD, wiping this HD & a Clean install would be the best install of win7

I know several students that have used the student download to do this.

You have a lot plugged in according to the screenshot. Have you tried install yet with everything except one HD unplugged as advised earlier?

What are I, N drives and Norton backup - any one of these could be interfering. Norton is best uninstalled.

Do you have two HD's or is E a second partition? You could try install to another HD or partition besides XP if overwriting XP is an issue.

You can jot down all of your BIOS settings before trying to reset the CMOS so you can fall back if needed to restart XP. Resetting the BIOS solves a lot of install probs, as does wiping the HD.

But the failure during file loading is most often an installer issue so you should focus on that by confirming the HASH on the student download using Hashtab against official Win7 HASH, so you know you have a good download: HashTab... is the coolest thing ever!
Windows 7 RTM SHA-1 hash - checksums

Then burn another DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Not sure how your finances are as a student, but I just got an email from NewEgg today for their Memorial Day Sale items! A 2TB SATA HD for $ 59.99 plus a lot of other items on sale ;)

Thanks for all the tips, my N: and I: are related to a USB Stick I had plugged in. The larger 1 TB WS HD is an external drive and the smaller one is my internal.

What would be the best way to format my HD at startup?
