Slow Transfer Speeds from my NAS

I am hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this problem. When transferring a 3 gig file from my NV+ to my internal hard drive I get speeds of around 300 Kb/s and message saying the transfer will take 18 hours.

When i transfer the same file to my wifes computer over the same network the speed jumps to 30MB/s which is what it should be. I cannot understand why this is happening as my wife's computer is way slower than mine with only a core 2 duo processor and 2 gig of ram.

We are both running windows 7, hers is home premium and mine is Ultimate both 64 bit. Any help greatly appreciated.

How fast can you transfer from your computer to your wifes computer and vice versa?

It could be a problem with the router or switch, a cable, a network setting on your computer.

What are the rest of the parts in your network, make and model will help.

I once had a somewhat similar problem... although it was a wireless transfer issue.. and I wish I could help... I just had to pop in and say that I'm really feeling your rig! :D Nicely done... especially the wheel.

The transfer speed from my computer to hers is 12MB/s and the same the other way from hers to mine. I am using a Fritzbox 7390 router with gigabit ethernet. The NAS is a netgear NV+. Surely I should be getting the same transfer speeds as she is from the NAS .. I have been blaming the NAS up until I discovered my wife gets the expected speeds and I do not even come remotely close.

There is something wrong going on with your network, you should be getting at least 30MB/s (realistically you should get 60+MB/s) between your machines if you are all on Gigabit with Gigabit NICs.

Try bybassing the router and plugging in your computer straight to the NAS, if you are both Gigabit then you don't need a special crossover cable since nearly all Gigabit Nics have AutoMDX.

I am getting 80-90MB/s transferring large files between all the machine here at the house on the Gigabit network, Linksys E2000 router downstairs and a D-Link DGS-1005D upstairs.

You can also try and swap ports on the router and see if the problem follows the cable or the port.

Thanks Zephyr... the problem appears to be the cable between my computer and the router. I changed it over and am getting 30MB/s transfer speeds. My network card is gigabit capable but not sure if my wife's is .. does it slow the whole network down when one of the ports is not a gigabit using a gigabit connection?

Well, hers is gigabit if she is getting a sustained 30MB/s or more. 100mb is about 12MB/s max, and gigabit is 125MB/s max.
Is the speeds bursting to 30 and maintaining 30 throughout the transfer?

and yes, some cheaper hardware will cause all the ports to run at the speed of the slowest NIC connected.

Shouldn't if he's using a switch. Wireless without Mimo will do that.

Did you make the cables? If you buy new ones, make sure they are all CAT5e or CAT6.

I bought CAT5e as I could not get any CAT6 .. seem to be getting speeds around 30MB/s even though connected at gigabit speed so something is still slowing the transfers down a bit.

I've noticed that some of those gigabit routers/switches geared for home use aren't as fast or reliable as business class equipment. If you are looking to replace the or add a switch, I like the Dell PowerConnect switches. You should be able to pick up a 26xx series switch off eBay cheap now (well, cheaper than new).

I managed to get some CAT6 network cables today. Although my NAS transfers are still only around the 30MB/s still I am now getting 100+MB/s between computers on the network. Obviously there is an issure transferring from the NAS.

At least you've gotten it narrowed it down. I'd see if there is a firmware update or if there are any settings for the NIC on that NAS. I checked on Newegg and the NIC is 1GB.

I just moved some stuff over to the server. Both my PC and the server have 1GB NICs and connected to a Dell PowerConnect 5224 switch. I was getting speed upwards of 84MB/sec.

Have you thought it might be related to the drive(s) inside the NAS being of a slower speed or the configuration the drives are in (RAID0, RAID5, JABOD)?

Could be the NAS is speed limited even though it has a gigabit port on it. My brother bought one of the cheap D-link or Netgear NAS boxes last year on sale for $50 and it does about 10MB/sec, and reading up on the unit, everyone's does about 10MB/s.
