How to Use Bootrec.exe Tool in Windows Recovery Environment

You can use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to repair the following item in Windows 7 should you be experiencing startup issues that cannot be resolved by the Startup Repair option:
  • The Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store
To run this tool you must do so from within the Windows 7 Recovery Environment.
  1. Make sure your computer is configured to start from the DVD drive
  2. Insert your Windows installation DVD or Windows repair DVD
  3. Press any key when prompted
  4. Choose your language, time, currency, keyboard language and click Next
  5. Click Repair your computer
  6. Select the operating system you want to repair and click Next
  7. Click Command Prompt in the Systems Recovery Options dialog box
  8. Type the following commands in the Windows RE command prompt window and press Enter to execute each command (paying particular attention to insert a space where shown below):
  9. bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
  10. c:
  11. cd boot
  12. attrib bcd -s -h -r
  13. ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
  14. bootrec /RebuildBcd
When you have finished, type Exit at the command prompt then press Enter to close the command prompt window. Restart your computer.

What kind of machine have you got?

Do you have one of those 100mb partitions?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Can you post a screen shot of your disk management layout?

Mine looks like this:

Disk Management.PNG

You'll notice there is a small 100Mb partition at the beginning of Drive 0. It is this partition that should be active as it is the one that holds the master boot record.

You could try this method. If it doesn't work at first, try again.

I don't know how he can do that - he can't get into windows.

I was going to outline using 7 boot media - but caed seems to have lost interest.

It's late here.

Goodnight.

Goodnight.

It's early here and I was having trouble sleeping and thinking straight too.

You're quite right of course, but perhaps he'll post back later.

So I have tried this due to OS drive letters changing from C: to D: (for some reason) and now I can't even load system repair tools because it doesn't locate the OS in System Recovery Options window... I guess now I'll HAVE to reinstall windows, but how can I be sure the files that are (were?) on D: don't get deleted ?

Win7 x64
It did with me also.
I booted using Hiren Boot CD in mini Windows XP.
Disk Management.
Removed drive letter for system partition.
Assigned C letter to OS partition.
Now windows booted OK !
Try this.
You can backup the files also.

Cannot boot Win 7 Pro after Win 10 upgrade "mistake"

First some history JIC it is a factor.
I have a dual boot 32 bit desktop wit 2 x 250 GB drives. When new 8 yrs ago one drive was Vista. The other drive blank for storage of files. 3 years ago the MOB died. I did a like for like replacement (Asus Leonite). The PC fired up but did not boot (OEM Vista association missing?) I asked my daughter in laws brother to help. When I picked up the computer, he left a note saying he created a dual boot set up. He fixed the Vista problem and on the 2nd drive he installed Win 7 Pro 32 bit. He retained the Vista because he was not sure if I had backed up it's files.
Recently I received the Win 10 Pro reservation icon. I looked at Youtube tutorials on the choice of installing over the Win 7 or a clean install. I came away with the notion that my computer AKA motherboard was targetd for the upgrade. Because I wanted to retain the dual boot to now be Win 7 and Win 10. I formated the Vista drive and followed the on line wizard to install Win 10 Pro on it.
The end result. Win 10 Pro installed on Formatted Vista drive, but asked for ACTIVATION.
The Win 7 Pro drive could not boot.
I do not have any media. I am 70 yrs old and not familiar with Window OS methods. I do not have any discs for Win 7 Pro. What I found in my locker was CD that said Win 7 32 bit Repair disk. I was able to use it to attempt a repair. However the Win 7 did not show up for the selection when things like language etc are asked for. I did press next and it attempted a repair. Never got repaired and could not boot.

What can I do? I cannot afford as a senior to invest $200 in new non OEM software. I use Win 7 because I have a TV tuner to watch OTA broadcast TV. Win 10 does not have Median Center anymore.

Thanks for specific directions.
