Well, yes it kind of is and no it isn't.

Technically, it's first person perspective and you are still 'shooting' a weapon. It was also a mod derived from a FPS, so it has more in common to a FPS than a racing game.

But I know what you mean.


He was talking about innovations, things that hadn't been done before in the genre. The context he mentioned Portal was explaining how Duke3D did things first that hadn't been seen in a FPS before.

In context, the portal comparison fits. Comparing it to Mario Kart definitely wouldn't.

Serious Sam was doing similar things around the same time. It wasn't full of sex or idiotic jokes but it was the same run'n'gun type of gameplay.

iirc, Serious Sam didn't have intractable objects etc. Run n' Gun wasn't part of the 'done first' examples.

Have you ever played Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth? It has guns and shooting and stuff, but is NOTHING like your average FPS. Same thing with Portal.

Have you ever played Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth? It has guns and shooting and stuff, but is NOTHING like your average FPS. Same thing with Portal.

No I haven't, but then again I never said Portal was your typical FPS although semantically speaking, it still is a FPS.

It's played from a First Person perspective, uses standard FPS wasd/mouse control. It has a portal 'gun' that is used to Shoot. There is still a target to shoot said gun. The fact that this is where the similarities end are incidental.

Somebody originally misinterpreted Tubsy McYoutube and somebody else added to the misinterpretion. I simply tried to clarify the misunderstanding.

If others can't look past the end result to see a correlation of underlying FPS mechanics when comparing Portal to a typical FPS, then so be it.

do you have borderlands on steam?

first i had to open up an account with gearbox, then i had to enter my borderlands 'cd key' on the DNF official site.

that gave me another code to enter into steam to actually download the demo.

It has certain elements of a FPS, which do not magically make it an actual FPS, typical or not
It's like saying Bulletstorm is an RPG, because you can upgrade weapons and special ammo, then combine your attacks with different tricks (skills/abilities xD) for better efficiency. Again, though it contains (very tiny) RPG elements does not make it an actual RPG.

Cross-genres have become more common in gaming, and yes, I understand that sometimes it's difficult to properly "label" them; same thing in music. But the point is not to loose the aspect of the actual focus of the game, it's essence. Portal2 is about solving puzzles and platforming, this is the game's essence; the fact that you shoot a gun from a first person perspective is, in the end, irrelevant. Otherwise we could also call it a RTS if we had an overhead camera
