How many restore points do you have?

How much space do you have allotted to System Restore?

You could install WinDirStat to help figure out what is taking up so much space. You can find it here.

Expand the line "Packard Bell" (click on the little + in front) and see what is underneath. Look for the big ticket items. If it is not clear, keep expanding.

Well, here you have your answer. You have a lot of junk in Appdata > Local. Have a look what it is. Be aware that Appdata is a hidden folder which you have to unhide ( in Organize > Folders and search options > View tab).

1. shrinking the partition (with Disk Management) should not have that effect.
2. Of course it is the User folder that has that size because the Appdata folder is part of the User folder.
3. Did you open the Appdata folder to see what is in it?

DO NOT turn off System Restore. As surely as you do, you will need it and regret the choice.

I would take a look at the AppData folder in WinDirStat to see what programs are taking up so much space. That seems like a lot of space for an AppData folder unless you have a ton of large applications installed.

I would not delete any of the folders. Check the sizes and see what programs are using all of the space then uninstall them. Or maybe there is something in there taking up space that shouldn't be in there. Expand those folders in WinDirStat to check.

Uninstalling programs won't help, as ALL of them always leave some garbage behind.

@baraka, why not just install Ccleaner, run a scan for leftover files, and safely delete them? Since you apparently have no idea what you're doing, it's better not to delete stuff on your own.

So if a program uses 5GB and you uninstall it, but it leaves .5GB behind, then it doesn't help at all? I agree with your CCleaner suggestion, though if the programs are actually what is taking up space then CCleaner won't remove the files. I agree that it will probably help though and perhaps it is the temp folder that is using the space, hence why I suggested checking the AppData folder in WinDirStat.

From your WinDirStat analysis it appears to be the "Local" folder that has all the junk. So why don't you open it and post what is in it. If you do not know how to open it, post back. But do NOT delete any folders yet.
